At my towns dump today. Never had one this old. Love the appearance. Excellent condition, very lightly used. Even power cord is pristine. Went right to the welcome screen, so either never used or wiped? How to proceed….

  • Can't be updated past macOS Lion 10.7.5…even by third-party means.
  • Battery is likely shot so probably impossible to find a good replacement. Inferior battery might be obtainable. If you proceed you'll likely be tethered to the power cord most of the time.
  • Would be good for running old software that won't run in modern macOS.

More blasts from the past!

Snow Leopard isn't the original OS, so most likely someone wiped the drive and did a clean install. Not a lot you can do with a 32-bit processor nowadays, except installing older software or enjoying the nostalgia. Amazing that the Software Update still works!

edit: It looks like you can still install a community-supported web browser called Arctic Fox and browse the web even on a laptop and OS of that age. Pretty neat!

What an incredible find! I can only speculate at the reasons why a machine like that would have find its way into your local dump...

Some notes: As mentioned by others, since the A1150 has a 32-bit Core Duo, you're capped at Snow Leopard; good web browsing options are Interweb and ArcticFox. They're not perfect as some sites break (like, in my experience, Discord and Slack), but it should be good enough for most web tasks.

Also worth noting is that 32-bit Macs are limited to 2 GB, with 1 GB in each RAM slot. (And no, they won't take a 2 GB DDR2 SODIMM, at least in my experience.)

If you're looking for a good project to do with this Mac, put a cheap SSD in it (a fairly easy task!) and install Linux on it. Note that you'll need to use a 32-bit distro more suited to low-spec environments. MX Linux is what a lot of folks like to use.
