Just thought I would give a heads up to my find. I'm guessing most people waiting here for the new MP will want to attach their current 3.5" HDDs to the new machine somehow. Well, I found on OWC that they are closing out Seagate USB 3.0 enclosures for $6.79/each, they were at $40. I got 5 of them and will put them on a hub. Just looking toward the future...prob 3 months anyway. :)

I think better idea will be to buy Thunderbold external HDD case for new Mac Pro. That would not take USB ;)

Good find. I looked and didn't see them though.

Wth, did these fall off the truck or something?

I'm seriously questioning the performance of those el-cheapo enclosures, so one of you please post your tests once you receive them.

^^^^I certainly agree. OWC's stuff has always been, IMHO, overpriced. And something just seems wrong here. Also this note is not encouraging:

"OWC Note: Due to the nature of how this enclosure goes together in the original assembly process, it is normal for some of the clips to be damaged/broken during the disassembly process with they have undergone. Even so, these enclosures still do go back together/re-close/re-assemble with little difficulty and without impact to actual technical functionality. OWC Warranty for this item covers the functionality of the power supply, Cable and USB 3.0 Bridge component within the enclosure - not the physical condition of enclosure clips."

Look at the picture at the bottom of this page from their site, you'll realize that it was the enclosure used for Seagate's Expansion drives. Newegg.com used to sell these external drives cheaper than the internal ones, and I got a 3TB one way cheaper than the internal drive. Looks like OWC got a truckload of these drives on the cheap, and probably hired some labor to take out the internal drives for themselves and sell the enclosures for cheap, but the shipping cost is too high to be a good deal anyway. In case people didn't notice the disclaimer, the following quote gave away where they came from:
The clips break only when you disassemble it, not when you assemble it in the factory.

Pretty much correct. I've already bought 3 of those. They are very fast, and not intended for a lot of drive swapping. When they are taken apart, some of the plastic clips snap off. They normally are sealed with the drive inside, but these have been gutted. I don't mind sealing them up with my drives. Once the drive is in use on my system, it stays there. They're cheap, but fast.

Regardless, still cheap for used crap. They'll work for what I need them for, hidden storage under the desk.

There not used, they look nice, and they work well. They were gutted before anyone owned them. Mine came with an information sheet that explained about it. I ordered 3 the 1st time and was very happy with them.

Seems like it is very common for the HDD mfrs to sell 3TB externals for a far less expensive price than internals. This isn't true at the lower capacities. Why is this?

I find the OWC website to be poorly organized. Some things are very easy to find; other things, impossible!
