Need a DVD/CD drive for my Mac air. Is the apple super drive best of should I look for something else.

I have an LG DVD/CD on my iMac that works really well and they are quite cheap. Hooks up via USB and has really decent speeds. There are a variety of models available.

DON'T buy the Apple Superdrive. Too much money.

Instead, look for a 3rd-party USB DVD/CD burner. There are many out there.

Do you plan to use it for long-term archiving?

In that case, I'd suggest a burner that has "M-DISC" capabilities. M-DISCs are CD/DVD media that use non-organic material to provide a MUCH longer lifespan than you get from "regular" dye-based CD/DVDs.

They will last a LONG time.

I have this, and the last few times I've tried it, when I plug it in it crashes my Macbook Pro. I have the Late 2016 MBP 15" with the first touchbar. Does anyone else have this problem? Wondering if a recent update in the past year or so caused this.

I couldn't say. Haven't had the issue on my 2015 iMac (Big Sur) and my daughter has used it on her Dell laptop. Have you shot a message to LG? Maybe it's something they are familiar with.

Considering Blu-Ray uses the same shape disks as DVD/CD and Blu-Ray drives are backwards compatible with DVD and CD disks I'd definitely go with a Blu-ray drive unless you have a special need to have a DVD drive e.g. if you can find an older RPC-1 drive and need to use DVDs from multiple different regions.

You don't need Mac Blu-Ray Player to watch Blu-Rays. You can use VLC with MakeMKV to watch Blu-Ray videos.

Tried another disc drive - does the same. Any time I plug in or unplug an external physical disc drive (bluray, dvd, cd) my mac crashes. The only way to use one is to plug it in before I start my mac.

info: I am using Parallels but it is not running.
