I fully agree with Bozola. The terminal FTP is sufficient for much of my FTP needs. However, I don't know if it supports SFTP (which a number of services require). Otherwise, while not "freeware", Fetch is a longstanding Mac FTP client... and can be used even after the trial period expires (just be patient).

i like transmit. you can get a demo that does everything for like 10 mins. for me thats fine.
 
There is ftp as well as sftp on the command line.
If you'd like freeware with a GUI, try Cyberduck.
The very best client, to my opinion, is Transmit, it is not free, though.
 
I use ftp/sftp in Terminal some times and RBrowser Lite on others. Have applied for an EDU license on Fetch, because I used to have Fetch back in the OS 9 days...
