I have a 2 bay enclosure from OWC. Nice unit but not very quiet and it doesn't sleep. Looking for a 2 to 4 bay external that's quiet and will sleep when not in use. I stream all my photos and movies to my older apple tv. Was thinking of plugging it in my airport extreme. Anyone doing this? Is there a way to password protect the entire disk if I do hook it to the airport? Was looking at OWC's 4 bay inclosure but don't know if it's quiet. Plus it's raid only (from what I have read) and don't need raid, just JBOD. Suggestions?

What makes noise in your current enclosure? Maybe you should look at quieter HDs like WD's Caviar Greens for example. The enclosure isn't noisy unless its fans are blasting

First off, working backwards, i would not use JBOD. Its risky as if any of the disks fail, you will lose ALL of the data on ALL of the drives.

The ICY docks are nice and quiet. See link here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...ckTab=true&Keywords=(keywords)#scrollFullInfo

My neighbor also just bought this and really likes it: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817576009

I would then take your four drives and run them in a RAID5 using Softraid: http://www.softraid.com/

You can hook either of these up to the airport and password protect the Array through OSX

It's the fan noise. Stays at a specific rpm from the time it's fired up. Have it in the bedroom hooked up to my mini. Do any of the suggested enclosures detect the heat from the hard drives to adjust the fans? Would be nice for it to sleep when not in use too but sure any are capable. Thanks for the replies.
