Receipt is nice but almost worthless, WalMart, Best Buy, etc... were taking returns on "sealed" iPads that turned out to be boxes full of paper or other weights.

you of course want to open it before buying it. OP was scared of stolen products and needs receipt.

I can think of reasons why a sealed ipad would be for sale and not able to be returned:

1. bought to resell for profit and missed the return window. Can't sell for profit and forced to sell for lower price.

2. bought as a gift and recipient did not want it, too late to return. (does not explain why there are 6).

3. seller is planning to file bankruptcy and maxes out cc before doing so

4. seller is a student and purchased from university bookstore using student loan money.

I have purchased ipads from sellers in situation #2 and #4. Both were legit and I do not regret the purchase.

I just bought a new ipad 3 64GB for $600 on craiglist. I opened it and turned it on. I did not even ask why and how. I just ask if she got more and told my friends to buy from her too.

So you don't care if you're buying fenced goods as long it saves you enough money?

Receipts are worthless because it could have been purchased with a stolen credit card number.

Using an iPad as an ATM to cash out of student loans, that's classy. No wonder we have a student loan crisis.

btw.. I have sold "Sealed In Box" items on craigslist before. Here's what I typically offer them:

1) Give me the money first, but I'll let you open the box right there in front of me to make sure it turns on and fits the item description (meaning, i didn't sell an iPad 2 to you but calling it iPad 3, or something like that)

2) If it doesn't work, I'll give you the $ back. If it works and you decide not to buy it anyway, sorry.. you are SOL.

Anyways, maybe you can ask for that when you are buying it. If the situation is sketchy, I will typically use my phone to record a verbal agreement to the above before the transaction.
