That is a super sweet setup! I would love to have the XDR display some day, but can't quite justify it for my needs.

@mfouks, Twelve South also has a nice vertical stand called the Book Arc where you can keep your MBP in closed-clamshell mode and have it to the side of your monitor. They sell it at the Apple Store.

I've used it for years - I also have a very shallow / small work desk, and have loved the Book Arc - easy to work on my 27" LG 4K per below, and then unplug the TB3 cable and take my MBP with me as needed.

LG Ultrafine 5k is the way to go if the budget allows... XDR if you want to think about it.

right, but it's not compatible with anything but Macs - if you can live with that limitation, it's a great choice

Subjectively, how does the Dell's display quality compare to your MacBook's built-in panel? Thanks.

It's not a 5K monitor. But these screens are really, really good. Highly color accurate and excellent resolution. Plus thin bezels. Considering the fact that these are the same size as a 5K iMac, they have a much smaller footprint.

Originally purchased 4 LG 5K superfine monitors - 2 of them have issues and it has been impossible to arrange for their repair. LG customer service is horrendous. They really do not want to me ro send these back to them (as they used to repair them for a flat rate). You get a foreign call center and they take messages,. No one very calls back. I strongly advised agains purchasing any LG branded product. Your mileage will vary, but some companies are there after the purchase, LG is not one of them.

It's 5120 x 2160. Technically a bit wider than 4K (3840 x 2160). I run the display at "looks like 3360 x 1417", which is effectively 6720 x 2834 internally and I don't see any performance issue, extra heat or fan noise.

Yes, it has Thunderbolt 3 with two USB 3.0 pass-through and 85W power delivery.

Edit: pics or it didn't happen:

With this solution, it just "works".

This is one of the most helpful posts I've seen about this monitor. Bill P., I've read in some other forums describing the 34" you have looking a tad 'fuzzy' when running not in native resolution. Have you experienced that when running your monitor essentially at a 1.3125x scale? I have a 16" MBP as well and am trying to decide on a monitor. Thanks!

You can use super resolution and sharpness control options to improve text sharpness if you find the screen to be blurry.

I guess for some, the screen can be blurry due to the antiglare coating, but I've found it to be fine. I just set super resolution to medium on mine (I don't adjust sharpness) and that seems to help a lot with texts.

FYI, unfortunately this isn't monitor but dependent, but just a fact of using any external monitor with the 2019 16" MBP. It was designed where if you have any external monitor whatsoever, it uses the discrete graphics card, instead of the integrated Intel chip, and thus uses much more power / generates more heat / has loud fan noise.
