My 2005 apple display monitor finally died. I only need a standard replacement i.e., nothing fancy. Something inexpensive to get me by for another 12-18 months, until I buy a new computer/display. I am not very techie, so any advice is very much appreciated.

If you have a local computer electronics thrift store or a local FreeGeek store, then you can buy a cheap monitor there. Basically, you want a DVI monitor (if you're only getting by 12/18mths) with a 1920x1080 resolution and then get a mini display to DVI connector. You can get this from your local FreeGeek store if one is in your town. If you are in Seattle, there is RePC which is a popular computer recycling store. Have every single monitor you want plus the adapters for your 2014 Mini. Used monitors and adapters should net you no more than $40-50 for a good decent one. However, there might be a surge in price with everyone buying used equipment and monitors for online schooling and work so the prices I quote is pre-pandemic. Hope this helps.

My favorite: 27" Apple Thunderbolt display. Cheap on eBay.

Native connection via Thunderbolt - no adapters, no dongles, etc...
