    Hello All-

I need to update from Mavs to El Capitan so I can update FCPX & Motion apps. Everything backed up with Time Machine & CCC. All apps updated. Looks like I have to run Java SE6 2015-001 in order to use Photoshop CS5 Extended.

Do I uninstall Oracle Java v.8(update60) which I currently have then install the Apple Java SE6 before updating to El Cap or wait and do it after I update to El Cap? I have uninstalled PS CS5 already.

Also, do I update the new Java version from Oracle if I need Apples SE6 to use PS CS5 or not? I understand Apples Java is for apps and Oracles for web pages, that's why I ask. Do I just run one or the other or do both work independently together? I'm confused on this.

    Thanks for any comments-

I'm using OS 10.11.3 and Photoshop CS 5. The only java I have installed is Java SE6 2015-001 so Photoshop will work. I have not encountered web page problems so far, so I would say you do not need Oracle Java v.8(update60) also. I would recommend updating to El Capitan then install Java SE6 2015-001. The process of running the El Capitan full installer will remove Java SE6 2015-001 and require it to be installed before using Photoshop CS 5.

Thanks for the reply CoastalOR and it couldn't be better news. I've spent allot of time researching the PS Java fix & was optimistic that it would work, yet by far, it seems PS CS6 users dominated the forums & I don't think I ran across more then 1 other using CS5.

There seems to be such a variety of fixes out there (mostly directed at CS6 users), for example, in the similar threads listed below ("RESOLVED" Apple Java 6 for 10.11). I feel I would have difficulty navigating through some of those which involve lengthy "Terminal" code work to install SE6, but, if I messed it up, I'm backed up & would start over.

So, in your case, are you saying it's as easy as do the install and you get a pop-up asking you to download the correct SE6? I did uninstall CS5 though, figured it was a good idea, so I assume when I reinstall it that's when I'll be asked to download the SE6. Then again easy enough to download it after installing El Cap and before installing CS5.

I appreciate your input on this and will certainly try it as you did first, thanks again-

I did not uninstall CS5, but after installing El Capitan I had to reinstall Java 6 in order to run Photoshop CS5. I'm guessing when you reinstall Photoshop you may not get the Java error until you launch CS5.

Here is the direct link to Download Java for OS X 2015-001, in case you need it.

A final note to any photoshop CS5 people who may stumble on this thread.

My update to El Capitan was 100% perfect, as far as I can tell at this point. I never got any errors or requests to do anything. The download took 20 minuets, installation 35 min. smooth as could be.I checked my Epson printer and scanner which both are probably 10 yrs old. My Wacom tablet Intous3, perfect with all presets intact. And, the most dreaded, Photoshop CS5 Extended, Eye Dropper, Fonts, all I have tested work perfectly.

I'll say this, I spent at least 5 full work days (~6-8 hrs/day) researching everything about my Epson printer & scanner, the Wacom Intuos 3 (both USA & EU forums) as well as most every google search related to these legacy peripherals. I also updated every app in my applications folder, there are so many that "software update" misses because they are 3rd party-and, surprisingly so many that needed updating. Not to mention the most serious threat I had, the possible loss of Photoshop CS 5 Extended forever. Well, CS5 couldn't have been the biggest surprise, 100% functionality at this first testing.

From my readings, it seems those in the know tend to agree that El Capitan will be the last Mac OS available which can run Java SE6, that which Photoshop CS5 & 6 need to run. It's my understanding to this point in time that all Mac OS beyond 10.11 will not be able to run Apple's Java SE6 and hence the end of Photoshop personal ownership of the software, forcing you to subscribe to subscriptions (CC- Creative Cloud) to use the software that drastically increases the price beyond practicality for most enthusiasts.
I believe the alternative to photoshop, beyond CS6 for those who want to own there software will, with out a doubt, be Affinity Photo, I'm so tempted go go there now (only $50.00), but I can squeeze a couple more years out of CS5 it seems & who knows- more hacks down the line may keep it going for longer then expected.
