The whole idea of having a return policy is to give any customer a chance to use the machine before being completely out several thousand dollars. That is also why they have a restocking fee... So if you try their product out and don't like it or don't want it, you can return it for a fraction of the cost.

No - just 10-15 years ago, there was no such thing as a 'restocking fee'. Stores assumed that customers only returned something if it was defective, or something else came up. For example, you just lost your job, now could not afford something you 'just' bought. Stores were very liberal in allowing returns. In most cases, a receipt was not even required.

What happened was that people like 'murdercitydevil' abused the system and used it for 'free rentals', so stores have now added restocking fees to discourage this. I remember for my high school prom, that some girls did the unethical and bought a dress before the prom only to return it right after the prom. This was cheating back in my day, but the businesses didn't catch on until it became more widespread. And this started about 10-15 years ago.

People like 'murdercitydevil' have caused this restocking fee with their unethical practices. What he did is not illegal, but definately unethical. Is it illegal to sleep with your boss to get a promotion? No. But is it unethical? Yes.

Pure Unadulterated Opinion. One of the greatest things this we (Americans) have fought for.

That's true. Even if his post is just opinion, it's interesting, and does provide some good and plausible backstory for how these policies came into effect.

Yeah, you may think I have no morals. Well, you don't know **** about me, and basing a huge accusation like that off of ONE example that I posted on the internet is pretty unethical as well, if you ask me. what about the veil of ignorance? and furthermore, who are you to define morals? I view the situation as such - I'm not breaking any laws, I'm perfectly willing to pay the restocking fee imposed upon me, and playing by all the rules. To me, that's morally sound. Trust me, I'm not going to lose any sleep over this. And honestly, are you trying to pretend that in my situation, if given the opportunity to trade an outdated MBP for a brand new Arrandale and not have to pay anything but the difference in price, you'd refuse?

Nobody would refuse. It's just that you said that you never intended to keep it. But whatever; it's your life, so you do with it as you please. Being you though, I would definitely take it back and wait for the refresh. According to the rumor, the only hold-up was the lack of availability of Intel chips. That won't last. Going to a new architecture means that this will be a pretty significant refresh, so definitely worth waiting for. If it were me, I'm definitely waiting.
