i HAD my heart set on getting a macbook this summer. im planning to get the mid-level white macbook with 2.16ghz and the 120gb hd.

now reading the few recent posts i am concerned about quality issues.
I want this laptop to last me years. I will also be getting applecare just in case.

I just need assurance and opinions from you guys to let me know its okay and go on to purchase the macbook.

i was going to get a laptop from other brands but ive heard apple will last me longer than other laptops that run vista....

    thanks

No one is going to tell your that, without fail, your MacBook will be flawless. Hardware failures occur in computer hardware from any brand without exception. If you want to use a MacBook, then go ahead and order it. Don't worry about seeing a lot of posts about problems on a support forum, it makes sense. Not to mention that what you consider "a lot" because of 20 posts here is actually a tiny percentage of total MacBook consumers.

In terms of hardware specification, the Sony CR series has a better chipset and graphics.

The main reason to buy apple is the OS, laptop hardware has to take a lot more abuse than desktops and in terms of reliability all new laptops are pretty much the same - the actual components are pretty much the same too so there is no real answer to your question.

For me, Vista is not an option. I like XP but that's gone - if I bought a non-Apple laptop I would use linux, which will give you the same if not more longevity of life than an Apple.

(as an aside, I disagree about what that person said about Vista - Vista will get better and more efficient with time, and if you can run it today, you'll definitely be able to run it in the future.)

I just ordered a MacBook, 2.16 and it is flawless. People complain on forums they don't praise. If you lived in a hospital you would think everyone is sick. Not the case though.

I cannot find a better machine/support/OS for my money. I am loving this MacBook.

well i dont want to get vista at all...my brother has it..and we both dont like it...
reason what got me interested into the mac is the os x....

im just paranoid that im spending all this money on a laptop i desperately need and ending up being defective or having problems...

apple care takes care of that for me right?

Don't worry about finding a laptop that is better. Of course there's going to be a better and more powerful laptop that exists somewhere, but it probably costs more and, after all, you can't run OS X on it. At the pace computer hardware is improved upon nowadays, chances are someone is going to release the next big thing any day now...but you can't wait for that or you'll be wait forever. Get a laptop that meets your needs and be happy with it. If a 2.16GHz MacBook is plenty powerful to do what you need it to do, then you're set.

If you have any problems and are persistent enough, AppleCare or your standary warranty will cover repairs and replacements.

You said you already had your heart set on it. Presumably you did some research, right?

Apple hardware is not perfect, and I think statistically your laptop will need a repair within the first 3 years of ownership.

If you're more concerned about the quality, however, check out this article about the Dell support forums. Or, if you'd rather, check out the problems that plague users on these forums.

Note: Apple and Dell, as far as I know, are the only two PC companies to have message boards. I couldn't find anything official for Gateway or Sony.

The only things I've heard people have problems with is things like a single dead pixel because Apple doesn't consider a single pixel within the failure range, but if you are forceful enough (but still nice!) with an AppleCare rep or Apple Genius you can probably get it fixed under the warranty. Anything else that is an obvious fault of Apple's part (hardware failure, excessive heat, etc) AppleCare should fix it without complaint. AppleCare support is just as good as any other major manufacturer's, if not better.

the macbook is a great apple machine. more dent-resistant than the macbook pro and the case doesn't get as hot (temperature) as the macbook pro (metal conducts better than polycarbonate)

    Perfect...

My wife's 2Ghz MB is absolutely perfect. No flaws, blemishes, gaps, rattles, excessive heat, dead pixels, or other problems. I've been very impressed with that machine.
