Those Shures are probably as good as any in that price range.

Before I had my Senn 555s I had a pair of Senn HD485s -- doesnt look like they make them anymore -- but one of the features it had was great.

Single sided cable that was detachable -- so if the cable ever got mucked you just replaced it -- and it was 10ft long

looks like the HD485 were replaced with the HD428/438s: http://www.sennheiserusa.com/private_headphones_closed-stereo-headphones_502765

And you still want to look at some Sony V6 or 7605s. Do you have a Guitar Center near you? They often have a decent selection and you can try them on...

I was looking at a pair of the more expensive ($99) Shures that have the detachable side cord. I like the look, they got excellent reviews, and only double my target price.

I'll look at the Sony's you recommend.

The shures are good phones, but keep in mind, they were meant for monitoring. The grados are much more "fun" headphones.

Beats Solo AREN'T worth it.

I own/owned many headphones/earphones in the past and now. I'm not an extreme audiophile, but I'm quite picky on my headphones.

For $50, anything by Sennheiser would be a good choice. They're the best bang for the buck.

I own the Beats Studio right now, and I was quite satisfied with the sound quality, but didn't think it was worth the $350 price tag.
Then I tried Solo, since they advertised the ControlTalk so much, but I was totally disappointed with the sound quality. But I LOVE the ControlTalk, so I use it with my Studio now. It controls my iPhone 3GS and my MacBook. So I just took out the ControlTalk and hooked it up to my Studio, and voila, the ultimate mac headphone experience with decent sound quality.

Anyways, I would recommend anything from Shure and Sennheiser. Best qualities for the bang (not really Shure, but Sennheiser for sure)

Grado have a reputation for their amazing sound at a relatively cheap price. The SR60i that have been mentioned already have been judged the best value cheap headphones in tests by several magazines and web-sites I have looked at. Most reviewers recommend paying a little more for the SR80i that have more low-end.

Personally I prefer the open back headphones because they sound more natural than any other type of headphones.

As for the Grado look, it is a non-issue because they are headphones and so you do not see them when you use them. Having said that I like their somewhat vintage look.

Besides, they also have a more modern design, the iGrado.

If Grado are not your cup of tea, the Koss Portapro also have a good reputation for being amazing value.

Umm... you have a weird definition of fun.

To keep this brief, I like the Shure SRH840. I'm a tad bit biased, but have spent way more money on Grado products then Shure. If you want something more balanced, get the SRH440. While I still have a decent collection of Grado, I cannot say that I find them comfortable, which is a huge factor. If you are looking for a rare gem, many will recommend the Koss Porta Pros, but my $30 steal is Panasonic RP-HTX7. The Panasonics are "more fun" in the sense that they are colored, I don't know that I could/would say that about many of the Grado models that I have heard - that at least was not the intention of Grado.

You can thank mscriv for this, as - as far as MacRumors goes, my posts are done.

So these are the phones I'm leaning towards:

Sony MDR 7506
Sony MDR-V6
Sony MDR-V600
Shure SRH 440

Anyone have any thoughts on these?

Also, what do you mean your posts are done? and I can thank mscriv?

The 7506 and v6 are the same headphone, just marketed through different divisions of Sony. The warranty terms of the 7506 are a bit more accessible. Otherwise there is no significant difference between the two. The v600's are a consumer line and not in the same class as the other two.
