For the past week I've been checking for tutorials and trying familiarize myself with information on how to jailbreak and unlock this 3gs i was recently given. From my searches, the version I have seems to be unlockable and i have also read lots of conflicting information on how to unlock/jailbreak this iphone, whether it's possible or not, which is why I am a bit reluctant.

Anyway, i've just now come to realize that unlocking and jailbreaking are two different things, but it also seems I have reached the limit of my capacity for taking in info about this, since all the different versions of ways to unlock it are so f*$k#*@ confusing, I'm hoping someone can help out and clarify this for me.

Can I jailbreak my Iphone 3gs

    Serial 8702 - From what I learned this means 2010 12th week?

    5.01 (9A405)

05.16.05 - This is what's confusing. All the searaches I have for this baseband say it can't be unlocked.

It's an unlocked phone. If it's possible to jb, will jailbreaking somehow lock the phone?

    EDIT: 87012

    1) you can jailbreak your phone
    2) you need the 5th digit of your serial number - it was made in week twenty x of 2010 where x is the 5th digit. It is therefore new bootrom.
    3) the phone can not be unlocked by UltraSn0w which means it is either factory unlocked or unlocked via a Garvey SIM type device - you need to find out which.
    4) Jailbreaking your current FW will not affect your unlock. As later FW jailbreaks are tethered I would not advise updating your FW.

I've been reading up on some more posts about it, still confused though. It seems a lot of the people who tried from early in 2012, maybe the first few months had problems. There isn't much solid info on this version being JB'd after early 2012, the two reports I read both had issues when they tried to restart or boot the phone.

Is that because of the firmware or the baseband version?

Also, I've been trying to find the bootrom as well, I followed the instructions but couldn't find it under the "device instance path" heading using win7 device manager...

Jailbreaking is dependent only on installed firmware version and which iDevice the firmware is installed on.

Software and hardware unlocking (not IMEI unlocks) are dependent primarily on installed baseband version.

The date of manufacture warning only applies to the procedure of flashing the iPad baseband to downgrade the baseband on a 3G/3GS only.
Apple began installing a new, flash resistant bb chip about the 27th week of 2011 (week varies depending on the factory where the phone was assembled)

If the 3GS is locked to AT&T you can purchase an IMEI unlock for it on ebay for a few dollars.

I'm a little more confused. It's an unlocked phone so am I correct in assuming the baseband is not an issue with this phone in jailbreaking, because I think I read one other report stating the jailbreak process changes the baseband as well, although that may have been for the older model.

I've been reading up some more about people changing it to the ipad baseband, is that only for people with locked phones wishing to unlock their phone after the jailbreak?

Did you check if it is an unlocked phone?

Yes the iPad BB is only for unlocking.

I'm pretty sure it's unlocked as most local carriers here in HK don't lock their phones, although I don't currently have a sim I can use to test it.

So I guess all I need now is to confirm which bootrom it has?
