Need help installing new OSX Tiger!

Put the disk in, little window came up with the "install OSX" icon. Clicked restart, and bam. Nothing. Little blinking computer monitor and a question mark, and then a regular start-up to my normal OS X Panther. *weep*

Any reason for this? I've been contemplating calling mac support, since I have a little ~Applecare~ thing, but I figure I'd try here first.

thanks,
Naomi

Naomi, try shutting down, with the disc in the drive, and then holding "C" while turning the computer back on, and see if it boots into the tiger install then, instead of back to Panther.

Thanks for your response--- I'll give a brief overview of the things I've already tried:

1) Holding down the "C" key at startup. Still boots to Panther, with the blinking question mark.
2) Holding down option + c, or option + x or whatever. Computer goes haywire, fan gets really loud, and a funny screen comes up with some buttons (mac face, etc.) that I'm unable to click for some reason. I click, nothing happens. I've had to pull the plug and restart twice because of this.
3) Called mac support just now; lots of death metal music, waited 20 minutes, then a bunch of loud static forced me to inevitably hang up.

*siiiigh*

Anyway, any further replies would be GREATLY appreciated!

Looks like your copy of Tiger is not original but a copy that does not allow booting. That is the only thing I can tell from my 10 years of experience. You got a not bootable disk image of Tiger.

If is an original copy I have no clue what the problem may be, actually you may eb the first person in having problems instaling the system, I mean, there is no way to go when instaling Apple software, it does it itself.

Naomi, what kind of Mac? Another thing to potentially try is resetting all the pram/nvram... It has no negative impacts, but I'm not sure why it ought to help, either. Sometimes, it does, though. And it's the firmware and pram/nvram that determine what boots the computer -- not the hd -- AFAIK.

grrrrrar. Thanks mymemory-- I knew it had to be something like that. My friend gave me the DVD from god-knows-where, but it was seemingly very legitimate 'til the startup.

Itasor, I'm in Brooklyn. A bit far, but everyone needs a vacation, don't they?

Hmm that is kinda far...

It would be a waste to ship it just to get tiger installed when I'm sure someone buy you could do it. Do you have any Mac places around? I know we don't over here. :(

Yeah, I actually know of a popular one in Manhattan that's been mentioned approximately 204980983490238 times on various sites, TV shows, blah. It's the whole "money" thing that's preventing me from throwing in the towel and not having a friend give me his copy/bring my problem on down to a 'puter fixing store/etc.. Thanks for your support though!

Is the DVD burned? Or is it like imprinted with Tiger 10.4 and stuff? You shouldn't be using illegal Mac stuff. :) You can go download Windows as much as you want though. ;)

Duff-Man says....is it a real Apple supplied DVD or has it been copied? Either way, it is very probably in this case that you really have no license to be installing this anyway.....oh yeah!

Duff-Man says....yeah...piracy and license violations are not tolerated around here and some of us (who, me?) sometimes get a little hot under the collar about it :) - lucky for me I have the Duff-utility-belt (take that Batman) always at hand to grab a cool one when the heat rises too much. When you have the extra $$, buy a legit copy, and if you wish to install on all your Mac's buy the family pack - it's a great deal.....oh yeah!

Thanks Duff-Man; your compassionate advice and understanding in this rough situation will never cease to make me all warm and fuzzy inside. Never again will I entrust a friend to help me with anything mac-related. :D Someone also told me that, with my ~student discount~ (I have a student ID from last year, so what the hell?) I can get a huge discount. Excellent.

*promptly watches Simpsons reruns*

Duff-man says...yeah...better watch out...beware every knock on your door...you never know when it may be "Law & Order - Software Authentication Unit" calling (cue L & O music here)....

Lenny: I know she's in there
Curtis: Yeah, but let's wait and see if she tries yet another time to install that software
Lenny: c'mon...I want to catch her in the act - it makes for a better collar
Curtis: you don't understand how these minds work Lenny...they think they'll never be caught and they think they can't be traced..hang on..she'll make that fatal mistake and we'll have that air-tight case that even McCoy can't lose.

(..several minutes later they bust the door down, only to see sudwaffle sitting at the computer, pirated DVD in hand...)

Lenny: I think I am going to be sick
Curtis: Cool it Lenny, I've seen this many times before..we've got her...it all ends here.

heheheheheheh....my creative writing for tonight....oh yeah!
