Hi, I'm still a relative newbie so if you could help me understand what I'm doing a little I would appreciate it a lot!

I want to use the application GIMP for photoshopping however it requires X11. After downloading X11 and attempting to install it my computer told me that a newer version already exists and therefore didn't install.

Where can I locate this 'newer version' that GIMP is requesting?

Thanks! :)

Hi,

This is a really common mistake. You don't have to download anything. It's on your install discs. It should be on the first DVD -- put the disc in, open it up in Finder, scroll down to the bottom (I think) and find an optional installs package. Open it, follow the prompts, and select X11 when you're given a chance.

If you get to a place where you're given the chance to install X11 developer tools, you're in the wrong place. Another common mistake. Those are something different (to MAKE new X packages).

When you've correctly installed X11, you'll know because there will be an application called X11 inside your applications folder. And then it will automatically launch if you try to launch Gimp.

You'll get it. :)

Where are you downloading X11 from? The Apple site?

The X11 package is included on the Tiger/Leopard Install disks as an optional install item, so you may want to start there instead.
