so my friend purchased a second hand white mac book 2006, her brother got hold of it and some how managed to wipe the system now the mac book just boots up to mac os x utilities. ive tried reinstalling mac os x lion 10.7 via the internet but when it comes to putting in her apple id etc it just keeps saying currently unavailable please try again later.

cmd & R doesn't work as its a older mac book, and she never received no backup disks.

any help would be grateful, thank you

Ok, I’ve got a snow leopard dmg file on my usb stick which i formatted using transmac

How do i get this to boot on a MacBook 2006 model that has been totally wiped and only boots up in disk utilities?

Cheers

If you're trying to create a bootable USB flash drive version of the installer, I believe that can be done ONLY "on another Mac". You can't do it on a PC.

You need:
- a copy of the installer app
- a USB flashdrive (16gb recommended)
- ONE of the following free Mac utilities: "Boot Buddy", "DiskMaker X", "Install Disk Creator".

Boot the Macbook from the flashdrive.
DON'T begin the install yet.
Instead, open Disk Utility and re-initialize (erase) the Macbook to HFS+, journaling enabled.
NOW quit Disk Utility, open the Installer, and begin the install.

If you can't get anywhere with it, there are sellers on ebay who will sell you a USB flashdrive with the OS installer of your choice "pre-installed" and ready to boot from.

Can you boot it by holding down the option key and selecting the USB drive?

I tried this after watching a video on YouTube, but for whatever reason the usb drive doesn’t show after holding down option key on boot up

I’ve made a bootable usb drive via TransMac (windows app) which enables you to format the disk & then format with disk image (snow leopard dmg file)

I’m just stuck on what to do after that?

If you have a flash drive, I'd download Recovery Disk Assistant and use it to make a Lion boot drive. Also, make sure you're signed into the App store under your user name. Boot from the restore partition, Select "Get Help Online" and login to iCloud. It should then allow you to download and install Lion.

I’ve got no access to the OS my friend, it’s completely wiped. I can only boot it up into recovery HD

Login to iCloud is impossible as the browser just says no supported! :/

"Login to iCloud is impossible as the browser just says no supported! :/"

You can't do "internet recovery" on a 2006 MacBook. Impossible. Too old.

If you continue to "get nowhere", as I said above, easiest way is to go to ebay. Then look for a seller offering to sell you a USB flashdrive with the OS of your choice (I think that would be 10.7 "Lion") pre-installed. Will cost about $20.
Then, boot from the flash drive installer, re-initialze the internal drive (erase it!) and start over.
