Please Help... How do I manually add apps to launchpad in Yosemite?

I just recently bought my first Macbook Pro (coming over from the Linux and Windows world).

I have two user accounts on my new Macbook Pro, administrator and standard user. While using the admin account, I have installed a few apps outside of the app store (firefox and vlc). Both apps show up fine in launchpad while logged into the admin account. Neither of them show up in launchpad on the standard user account. I can see them under applications in the finder, but they aren't in launchpad. How do I manually add apps to launchpad in Yosemite?

I've tried to drag and drop from the applications folder in finder onto the launchpad icon in the dock but this does't work in Yosemite.

Thanks in advance for your help!

MacBook Pro 15" Retina (mid 2014)

Have you checked and confirmed that the app is not showing on another page on the launchpad?

Is the application in a custom folder you created in the Applications folder? If yes, move the application out to the top-level of the Applications folder and see if it appears in the launchpad. you can then move it back to your preferred folder after that.
