My friend runs a business and one of his hard drives failed recently.

It's a ~20GB Maxtor drive formatted FAT16. When you plug it into a Windows box it says the disk must be formatted. When you plug it into a Mac it says it must be initialized, same thing.

I know there is a command to force-mount a disk, but I just don't know where to find it. I've been googling for a while now and still nothing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have DiskWarrior at home and I will try it with this drive when I get home.

Oh, PS, it's mounted via a USB enclosure, the same brand (Dynex) that I've used in the past to backup someone else's hard drive when doing a Windows format.

Thanks!

If you haven't already, I'd recommend giving Data Rescue II a shot. It attempts to read the file structure of the disk directly, so at least in my limited experience has done better getting data off fried disks than any other tool.

Since it'll give you a preview of what it can see before you pay, you're not out anything but some time.
