Hi all,

Please, please, please can someone PLEASE tell me how to disable the "long press to customize lock screen"!!!??? This is horribly awful!! I am always accidentally going into this setting.

When my phone is locked I want it to stay locked unless I purposely unlock it.

I can access this from the wallpaper setting. Just grabbing it out of my pocket or putting it in my pocket does this sometimes. It's awful.

Thank you greatly for any help!!

Yes, I’m annoyed by this as well. I’ve currently put it down to fat fingers!

It's not your fat fingers, it's stupid design and engineering. Never have I had a smart phone where my lock screen doesn't stay locked. It's a freakin' "LOCK SCREEN"! lol.

Are you saying you can't disable this??????!!!!!! I switched from Android and LOVE my new iPhone, but this could be a deal breaker if I can't disable this.

Long press is the only way to customize the Lock Screen/Home screen combo and was introduced in iOS16. Stupid design or bad engineering is your opinion and you're entitled to it. In my experience, I have never inadvertently triggered what you're describing.. I actually don't like the fact that you can't just change the Lock Screen or the Home Screen independently without going through the whole customizing process... If this implementation is a deal breaker you may be going back to android as Apple isn't likely to change it. It's possible iOS17 might have changes but we won't know until the betas are released this summer

Bro, it's a lock screen. I put my phone into and take it out of my pocket by grabbing it. It is always triggering it.

My opinion? It's a lock screen and it should stay locked. Also I am finding lots of people on the interwebz that are very frustrated and rightfully so.

So i'm guessing I can't just simply disable it?

Why not add one line where people can simply disable this "feature".
Because it's a feature that was added and Apple designed it that way. Your telling me what you want and I'm telling you how it is.. Will it change in the future? Possibly but for now that's how it's implemented.. You can't disable it.. You can always leave feedback to Apple about your suggestions for changes...

The long press on your Lock Screen isn't unlocking your phone. Try it...cover up the Face ID module and long press the screen...nothing happens. There's no way to disable the long press.

Sounds to me your phone is getting unlocked easily by Face ID, or it's getting unlocked by your Apple Watch if you have one. Then of course when it's unlocked, it'll allow the long press. Have you turned off "Require Attention for Face ID". If so, that makes it easier to unlock, so maybe turn that back on if you have it off. Can also disable Face ID from being used to unlock your phone, but still allow it to be used for other things. Or if you have the Apple Watch, turn off unlocking with the Apple Watch.

So you think it is good design/idea to have a LOCK screen that can easily and accidentally be triggered when you grab the phone? ok........

Thank you very much!!! I tried covering up the face ID and sure enough it does NOT unlock. Phew!! I do not have an Apple watch yet, so it is weird that it is getting triggered sometimes when I am not looking at it.

Maybe face ID has a good FOV and is still seeing my face even though I don't think it is.

This makes sense now! Thank you again! I would still like to completely disable the press, but this is much better than what I thought.

I said I've never inadvertently triggered it.. I didn't say whether or not it was a good design decision... You asked if it can be disabled, the answer is no. Apparently you found a work around

Yes, it will work ok. Didn't mean to be hostile and I meant nothing by saying "bro". Thank you for trying to help. I appreciate it!

I am also not trying to bash Apple. I LOVE my iPhone. In fact I love it so much I just got my wife a 14 Pro and Apple watch 8. She just got them yesterday and she loves them already.

I guess I was just shocked there is not a slider to disable the touch to customize function.

So I found another setting that helps even more. I turned "raise to wake" off. So now the only way to make the screen turn on is to push the right side button or to tap the screen. Grabbing the phone while touching the screen does not turn the screen on. It has to be a tap.

So what was happening was that I would grab my phone, it would turn on because it was raised and them by grabbing it to put it in my pocket it sensed a long press and went into customization mode.

Again, I still think it is crazy that there is not a simple disable slider for the customization option from the lock screen, but turning off "raise to wake" makes it pretty close to that.

…and I wish I could disable the ‘long press to edit the home screen’ feature. If I then would want to edit it I’d simply unlock the feature again, akin to the rotation lock.
Or just go to the wallpaper setting under settings and change it from there.

Few cents:
If you have circle battery widgets on Lock Screen you can press them and due to Bug-or-a-Feature from Apple it will not activate lock screen edit…

I also turned off raise to wake immediately and enabled tap to wake. I'm also constantly taking screenshots accidentally because I press the volume up and wake/sleep buttons when taking my phone out of my pocket.. Swipe left on the Lock Screen activates the camera when I don't need it.. There's a lot of things that aren't well thought out in iOS but thankfully I find 98% of it perfect for my needs. Good to hear your finding ways around the issues and making the experience better..

So turning off "tap to wake" and turning off "raise to wake" I believe solved my issue completely. Now I have to push the right side button to activate the screen. Movement and taps no longer activate the screen so there is no way to easily and accidentally unlock the lock screen.

I used to tap to see the time when my phone was next to me, but now I turned the "always on" screen back on and everything stays locked. My sanity has been restored. Thank you all!!

I think I will go take a Midol now. Ha ha!!!!

I have not had any of those issues thankfully. I have pretty much found a way to make it work 100% how i want.

I think the taking screenshots accidentally would be a universal problem as my Android functioned the same way.

Thank you again for your help.

Great to hear this solved your problem. I’m glad tap to wake and raise to wake are disable-able, because even back to the iPhone 8, it was super annoying and useless to me.
but I agree, Long press to edit isn’t good for the Lock Screen.

Thank you! My phone is working exactly how I want it to at this point!

I agree with you mostly, but to be fair you can’t actually trigger it while the phone is locked. Once it sees your face you can, but from what I just tested as long as it’s actually “locked” it won’t trigger. It is a bad design though

Ya, I found that I could sometimes trigger it even if the phone was turned away from me. I think that issue though is me not understanding when it is actually locked or not even though the lock screen looks the same the same if that makes sense.

Just seems to me like one of several ways the redesigned lock screen could be improved, you shouldn't need to disable Raise or Tap to wake for something unrelated. Not everyone is looking to constantly customize.
