iOS has too many touch gestures in general. Many of them should be optional or have alternate ways to operate.

For many people, using Apple touch devices is a practice of not touching anything too long, too hard, or with too many fingers. This is especially ironic from a company that touts itself as accessibility friendly.

Just seems to me like one of several ways the redesigned lock screen could be improved, you shouldn't need to disable Raise or Tap to wake for something unrelated. Not everyone is looking to constantly customize.
I agree. I knew when I was making the switch that I would not have the ability to customize like Android. I also didn't do a lot of customizing on my Android. I guess I view customize stuff and adjust basic functionality as 2 different things. lol.

I totally understand people might not want to have the settings like I do, nor should they have to if a simple, single disable slider was added.

Fortunately for myself my phone is now working as I would like it to.

When the reply starts with, "So you think...", what follows is almost never what the person actually thinks or said. FYI.

So you think that when a person's reply starts with "So you think . . ." that they're almost always putting words in the other person's mouth?

(You don't have to reply. I just wanted to be one of the rare few that starts their reply with those words but is accurate 😂)

As for the thread topic. I'm glad the OP is happy now. I've seen similar complaints about the flashlight on the lock screen, but have never understood how people are managing to constantly trigger it. Once in a while, maybe, but all the time? I guess I just handle my phone differently when moving it in and out of my pocket. I normally grab the sides of the phone, not the front and back.

I didn't have any issues with the camera or flashlight from lock screen.

The reason I grab my phone by the front and back is because I am usually taking it into and out of my pocket as I get into and out of my truck and I am on concrete or asphalt. I feel like I have a much better grip and have a significantly less chance of dropping the phone if I hold it that way when taking the phone out of my pocket or putting it in. I have lost my grip and dropped other phones by holding it by the sides. I also don't hold it as tight that way as I don't want to press the buttons accidentally.

This is just me and my opinion. I understand everyone has their own preference.

I don't mean a dainty grip on the side, but a firm one. But I just experimented a dozen times pulling my phone out of my pocket by placing the pad of my thumb on the bottom of the phone and the side of my index finger on the front in a tight grip. I couldn't get anything to trigger (camera, flashlight, or lock screen customization) doing it that way either. Yes, I have raise to wake on.

So I have a 2020 Chevy Silverado with the inset in the center console for a phone and I plug it into the truck (no wireless) for CarPlay.

I would pick up the phone on the side, like you do, then i grab it between my thumb and other fingers so I have a good grip and don't drop it to put it in my pocket. As I am doing this the phone is somewhat facing me and probably unlocking. Or if I pick it up off of a table from the sides then spin it so I am holding it between my thumb and other fingers the phone is also somewhat facing me and probably unlocking.

I grab my phone at the top so I would never accidentally grab the camera or flashlight buttons.

That's my theory at least.. lol.

Oh just wait until you grab your phone from your pocket and put the flashlight on accidentally…
Which worked fine when there was Force Touch, now it’s just crap.

This lockscreen feature is also just copy pasted from the AW, where it also worked great with Force Touch.

Apple doesn’t design the things the way they used to.

Yes it's bad, and it also took me a while to figure out that was the way to edit the lock screen.

Ya, I found that I could sometimes trigger it even if the phone was turned away from me. I think that issue though is me not understanding when it is actually locked or not even though the lock screen looks the same the same if that makes sense.
That’s exactly it. The lock screen is visible (and the phone looks locked) but the tiny lock icon is missing - which means that the phone is actually unlocked. Poor design.

This must be what happened to me recently. I discovered I was in sleep focus in the middle of the work day. Missed notifications. Missed callls. Caused quite a stir.

I must have swiped to sleep focus accidentally when putting my phone away. I just tried it and it’s easily done.

Yeah, that "feature" drives me crazy, too. It's just about surpassed my hatred for the long press to Edit Home Screen "feature". I'd like to see lock/unlock sliders for both of these "features" in Settings.

Hi all,

Please, please, please can someone PLEASE tell me how to disable the "long press to customize lock screen"!!!??? This is horribly awful!! I am always accidentally going into this setting.

When my phone is locked I want it to stay locked unless I purposely unlock it.

I can access this from the wallpaper setting. Just grabbing it out of my pocket or putting it in my pocket does this sometimes. It's awful.

Thank you greatly for any help!!
If we would all go to the Feedback site and complain about this and the long press to Edit Home Screen feature, maybe Apple will listen, and incorporate a fix (like lock/unlock sliders in Settings) into a future release of iOS.

I submitted feedback.

This is the problem with me and the “no bezels” design. I’d prefer the Touch ID design so I have a non screen surface to hold on to.

I don't trigger it every time, but at least a few times a week and it's very annoying. If I could deactivate it I would.

I would like a “some bezels model” like the iPad Pro. Even then on the 11 inch model they’re a bit close for the size.

Ran into this today with my 13 mini where I accidentally swiped the screen trying to pick it up and started a podcast over.

These days the bezels are so small my fingers roll over the edge when putting the phone down and random things get pressed. And now the rumors are the next iPhone will have even smaller bezels… the 14 basically doesn’t have any already. They may as well roll the screen over the edges.

I have a similar issue with iOS 16 lockscreen. I ended up disabling the camera because somehow putting the phone in my pocket I was repeatedly triggering the camera. The issue being that when pulling the phone out after such a trigger, I often was finding myself with a toasty hand-warmer with most of the battery discharged. A bit silly that you can't remove the camera button from the lockscreen - the only way to eliminate the problem is to disable the camera completely in Screen Time.

This was a really helpful thread. I'm constantly getting stuck in this lock screen customization and/or flashlight turning on. I really hate that Apple won't allow us to _actually_ customize the lock screen.

I do not want the flashlight and camera buttons there, nor do I want the lock screen customization there.

However, now that I have an iPhone 14 Pro with AOD, turning off Raise to Wake is perfect. I don't really want it to wake anymore because AOD has what I need. If I want to open it, I can just swipe up to unlock. It works from the AOD screen. Brilliant.

Disabling edit of Lock Screen by a switch in Settings > Wallpaper should make it the most easy to implement…

Same should be on Apple Watch,
really it’s dumb implemented.

I am not having anything against flashlight and camera shortcuts on it but I agree it would be nice to have possibility to turn them off or even change.

Edit:
You can not only report bugs but also give suggestions in Feedback app on every iOS not only betas…

The problem with flashlight accidentally turning on, is that Apple(because they're greedy sob) decided to remove the 3D touch from their phones. Before that, you actually had to PRESS the flashlight in order to open it, now a lot of times, when you grab your phone in your pocket, you'll accidentally hold your fingers on flashlight button, and it will turn it on. Happens to me a lot. It is totally stupid.

And speaking about stupid, this wallpaper costumization is a total pain in the A. I change my wallpaper at least 3 times per week(not by my choice of course) because somebody at apple thought that this would be a great feature. It is not, it's annoying and stupid and needs to get an option to be disabled.

I love iphones, but sometimes i wonder if Apple has some sort of "2nd tier" UX designers, who get to work on projects, that the main guys just dont have time to do. Like this stupid wallpaper feature.

Same problem here though I do not have fat fingers. Surprisingly, android iOS launcher has an option to lock home screen
