So I had snow lep. Then I made a partition and put os x Lion on it. Then I transferred my data to Lion and wiped Snow lep. The only problem is now osx won't let me take my free data from the old partition and put it back as a whole. Any thoughts?

plan B

resize on the fly makes me nervious so no idea on that angle.

i'd clone the new partition to an external, boot from the external, and then use 'disk utility' to partition and erase the original drive. clone back and you should be good to go. advantage is also having a functional backup while you are flirting around with disaster and all that. best of luck.
