So I have an ATT iPhone 4S that I'm trying to get to boot. I have a friend of mine who used to work at an Apple store, he took a look at the phone and reassured me the internal parts were all in working order and so I began my journey to try and get this thing to restore.

    The status of the phone:
    - When I attempt to power the device it doesn't boot up, not even to the Apple logo. It'll light up just a bit to indicate something is happening but it never goes past that point.
    - I can connect it to iTunes in recovery or DFU mode and iTunes will let me know it needs to be restored, it cannot retrieve any firmware information or anything like that.
    - When I attempt to restore through iTunes I have gotten several error messages:

Error 21 - fixed this, I was being dumb and did not put a sim card in.
Error 1602 - fixed this by using iReb to force DFU mode.
Error 3194 - This is where I am stuck. From what I understand this has to do with the firmware being unidentified or not usable. To resolve this I was directed to try and save the shsh files/use TinyUmbrella. That did not work since its in a perpetual recovery state TinyUmbrella can't do anything with the device. I attempted to use the ECID to create a generic device in TinyUmbrella and get the shsh blobs that way but the logs tell me they cant and that im too late. I had also tried to change the host file address at the end and that was a no go, continued getting the error.

So at this point I have a phone that wont boot up, wont restore, I have no idea if there is any way to retrieve an shsh file or if that'd even help. Error 3194 seems to be here to stay.

Any super smart people out there who have wisdom to share? Have I reached a wall that cannot be passed? I'd be pretty sadfaced if I had this pretty paperweight :/

3194 error means you have the host file pointed the wrong way.
You cannot restore a 4S to 5.1.1 right now.
You can upgrade it to iOS6. host file pointed to Apple.

is there something I'm missing about getting the device to install 6.0? If I connect the phone and click restore without doing anything special, aka letting iTunes just do its thing (presumably install whatever is right according to Apple) it gives me the error message.

The error pops up both when the host file is using it's default address as well the address I plugged in so I don't know how to direct it properly then if neither of those is right.

To correctly point your host file to apple, open tiny umbrella and uncheck "set hosts to cydia on exit". Then close tiny umbrella and try the restore again. If it doesn't work confirm that option is unchecked in TU and reboot your computer. Try a different computer if all else fails.

Update: The phone is deciding it wants to be a pain in the butt, making sure the box was unchecked in TinyUmbrella (and it was) I retried then switched to my parents iMac where I got errors 2001 and 2006. The iTunes isn't updated on their computer and their away while I don't have the password so I'm going to attempt on a friends computer today.

there's gotta be an explanation for all these wierd varying errors. seems like im getting everyone in the book.

    3194 is host file,

    From the iphone wiki:

    "Error 2001
The Mac OS X kernel extension "IOUSBFamily" that was bundled with late 2008 / early 2009 MacBooks, as well as the 10.5.6 update, has a bug where it fails to properly recognize an iDevice in DFU Mode. It can be resolved by updating to 10.5.7 (or later), or using a USB hub.
    Close limera1n."

    "Error 2006
Replace the USB cable with a newer one and/or disconnect all other USB devices, then retry."

yes I've been visiting the iPhone wiki quite a bit :)

I have recieved the 2001 error on two seperate macs now, both running newer versions then the one that had been having the issues so I'm not sure what is going on. I attempted to use a hub and it also failed to correct the problem.

the 2006 error I've only gotten a few times, I've used a brand new cable and not gotten the error since.

I'm still running into the 2001 error on Macs and the 3194 on pc's and it seems like the normal fixes aren't producing a fix -.- starting to think I may just have a dud phone that refuses to work.

yea I had restarted the computer each time, got myself a meeting at the apple store tomorrow so I guess they'll let me know their prognosis, just a shame I wont know if they tell me its done whether it really truly is or not.

You do know you cannot currently restore a 4S since Apple stopped signing 5.1.1

even if the attempt is to 6.0? I had known going in that 5.1.1 would not work so I've been trying to restore to iOS 6. Wouldn't that mean that anyone who is a 4S owner and in a similar situation to me is just stuck?
