Hello all,

Im selling my macbook pro and am trying to restore it to factory settings.

I have inserted the "install disc" many times. However, my laptop is never able to start up. It alternates between a black and grey (no apple or wheel) screen.

I've tried holding down the "C" key while rebooting..that didnt work.
I've tried clicking restart when it instructs me to...that didnt work
I've tried going to system preferences --> startup disk --> clicking the install drive and it still didnt work.

What can I do?

My mac can start up and work perfectly fine without the disk, its just that i need to restore it to factory settings.

Try to reboot, holding down the option key, wait and try clicking on the DVD install disk and then the arrow on the right after the cursor appears.

If that doesn't work (ie. something wrong with the install DVD or the disk drive?) you could try going into the System Preferences, Accounts, and making a new admin User, assign it a short name and password, and then after switching to that new user, delete your old User account. You will still have to delete any applications or utilities you installed and do not want to pass on, but at least your information will be gone (not sure just how secure this is).
Or you could try booting up in Target disk mode and formating the disk from another Mac then installing the System from that Mac's disk drive.
Also, it may be difficult to sell the machine if the disk drive isn't working, just something to consider.
Good lick.
