Hello all,

For 3 days I have been trying to set up a Mid-2010 MBP to dual boot OSX and Windows 10 with no success. Here is my conundrum:

-Windows 10 installs perfectly fine as a second partition alongside Mac OS within a GPT formatted disk
-Since windows installed onto a GPT disk, the OS is set up for UEFI mode, which prevents any and all graphics drivers (and most other drivers for that matter) from being installed since they require non-UEFI legacy boot.

-If I reformatted the disk as MBR and use a DVD based installation disk, windows 10 will install in non-UEFI mode and all drivers will work flawlessly.
-If I create a new partition on this MBR drive to install OSX, all OSX installers will complain that the MBR drive is not compatible with Mac OS and needs be reformatted as GPT, even if the partition is HFS+ or APFS.

-If I try to use a 3rd party tool to create an MBR/GPT hybrid disk, such as Gdisk, either the Windows partition or Mac OS partition (depending on which was originally installed) will be corrupted and unrepairable.
-I have tried to use patches which bypass the OSX storage firmware check and they did not work.

Thus is my dilemma. Has anyone ever successfully created a hybrid disk for Mac OS and an MBR formatted install of windows to coexist? I tried using Gdisk and gptdisk (windows) and both attempts to create a hybrid disk type bricked the OS installations.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

You'll need to use a DVD to install legacy mode for Windows. UEFI installations (USB) can screw your Mac up and possibly brick it. Split your Mac partition to whatever needed size for Windows and format it as FAT and GPT. There are installation instructions in the correct forum. Look for that and you'll be OK.

You most likely received no answers earlier than mine because most will think you haven't searched hard enough in the correct forums. This topic has been discussed in depth.

Hi, it's easier if you first install MacOs but you can format the drive in the MacOs Installer, use disk utility to create a FAT partition for windows and then use a Windows install DVD (holding C key or selecting Windows in EFI boot screen, don't install it in EFI mode you know the reasons at this point) it should format the partiition and install in MBR (Disk utility creates the hybrid GPT), I'm not sure but I think the latest windows 10 installers do not allow installing in MBR, as I said I could be wrong on this. I use version 1803 (I believe that is the last version that fill in a single DVD) upgrade it, install bootcamp drivers and refind if you want to.

I never do that on an APFS since it uses containers but I guess that you could do a partition in disk utility before installing MacOs.
