I believe you can only like the mobile number if it is an iPhone. iMessage only works with devices connected to the apple ID, so an iOS device.

All you need to do is register for an Apple ID. From there, you will be able to iMessage him using your Apple ID email address.

Just set the iMessage option to on in the settings. As long as your BF is using a iOS device (iPhone iPad etc) you can iMessage & Facetime him through his Apple id address. This can be his mobile number or email address associated with his apple i/d.

You can't use a mobile number with an iPad/iPod Touch using iMessage.
You'll have to deal with using your Apple ID email, although if you send your BF an iMessage to his Apple ID email, it'll still go to his phone if he has iMessage set up with his email as a recipient.

You can if your apple ID is associated with a cell phone number too. I have an iPhone with iMessage set up on it. When I set up iMessage on my ipad and iPod is asks me if I want to have my phone number added to the send/receiving addresses or not. It wasn't always like this though, it used to only be email addresses as far as I can remember. The OP will only be able to set it up to send/receive via email but she will be able to message cellphone numbers with no issue as long as its an iPhone. The ID appearing on the recipients phone with show her email address as opposed to a phone number, unless they have her email saved in their contact list.

I iMessage my wife and friends from my wifi only ipad all the time to their cellphones using their number.

I only meant you couldn't have ones own number as a recipient without the iPhone, not that you can't send iMessages to cell numbers, sorry for being confusing :p

You said they can't use a phone number with an iPod or iPad. But as long as you have an iPhone associated with the same apple ID, you can. My ipad and iPod have my phone number in them as possible send/receive addresses but I have that turned off.
