I am obviously not knowledgeable about computers. I purchased a retina MBP for my 15 year old daughter this past Christmas. I talked to the folks at the Apple Store (over the phone). They guided to me to purchase the 13 inch, 16 GB I7 but with only 128gb of storage. The lady told me since i also purchased a Time Capsule (2 TB) I'd be OK. I (believe) I now understand I should have ordered the larger storage. What is my best solution for her? I plan to purchase 2 more MBPs for my other 2 kids this Christmas and will buy the larger storage, but do not want to replace hers if not necessary. She has about 25 gb left on her storage now. Thanks for any help you can give...please keep it simple for me to understand.

The Wirecutter website is very good with in depth reviews about all kinds of technology. They also offer alternatives if you don't like their pick. I have bought several items based on their reviews and have never had a problem with that purchase. Just remind your daughter to only store what is essential to her computer needs on her laptop. Pictures and music should probably be stored on a hard drive since their is only 128gb on the laptop.
I have the 2TBSeagate portable hard drive that they recommend and it is very easy to use and big enough to store a complete back up of her OS just in case of problems. Only $79 on Amazon right now and you can get it in different colors. Of course she should do what's best for her needs. At least this is a good starting point for you. If you want an external HD, Here is the link to The Wirecutter site review for that: http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/the-best-external-desktop-hard-drive/

Thanks for the reply...Bought her the Seagate 2TB...she says her issue is 'other applications' is taking up the majority of her space. Perhaps with the new release she can 'optimize storage' and that will free up.

I was just looking at optimize storage last night as well to see if it could help me. Glad you solved your problem.

Use GrandPerspective to find large files.
Thanks - I'll look into to for her - the optimized storage and a disc clean app cleaned up some space but 'Other still shows over 25gb being taken up. She haas moved everything over she can (she thinks) but maybe your suggestion will allow her to better evaluate.

The optimize storage helped her with about 5-10 gb...but 'Other' is taking up SO much space. Looking into that now for her. She only has about 15gb free with nothing saved...
