Need help syncing home Mac to work Mac

This should be self evident, but I just haven't got my brain around it.

I want to sync my contacts (etc.) from my main Mac at home to my secondary Mac at work. How does .Mac know to accept the changed contacts from my home computer and not the incomplete information in contacts from my work computer? In other words, I want the work computer to only pull the new data and not upload any data.
