Hello the cmd-alt-r is not doing anything for me, can you help me reset my mac so I can give it to a friend emptyed of my past life!!

10.6 doesn't have a recovery partition, and a computer running 10.6 is likely to be too old to have Internet Recovery (which won't restore 10.6 anyway). You'll need to use the restore DVDs that came in the box.

Recovery is not automatic. Recovery is available from 2012 models generally, and some 2011 and 2010 models if they have had firmware updated. Have a read of this:-

It sure helps if you tell us WHAT YEAR the iMac was made.
I believe it has to be a late 2010 model or at least 2011 to do "internet recovery" (command OPTION R at boot).

Is it by any chance a "white" iMac (body made of white plastic)?

I'm thinking what might work for you (if the DVD drive still works) might be a "universal installer" DVD with OS 10.7 "Lion" on it...

Just open Finder -> Application and use your mouse to move the apps to the trash box, sign-off your Apple account.
Don't be too paranoid about your personal files. He is your friend, isn't he?
