Ok, I'm looking to upgrade my mom's PC. She does NOT want a Mac and as much as I'd like to help her come to the bright side of life, I can't afford to drop the money on a Mac mini.

She's using my old PC but it's starting to show its age when using current internet technologies. I haven't really dealt with Windows PCs since 2006 so I'm not as familiar with the current hardware.

Is there another website y'all can suggest I can use just to make sure I'm getting the right hardware that's both compatible and upgradeable in the future? I think I'm good, but I just want an "expert's" opinion. If someone on here can help, that'll work.

I've thought of getting her a used mini, but a decent one will run about $400+ while this upgrade, without OS, will run $250. She should be fine with XP and later on I'll upgrade her to 7 or 8.

1 - Mostly, but I think she plays some light games and Facebook games
2 - Already has a 24" Samsung LCD
3 - ???
4 - Desktop
5 - Internal, would need to upgrade that as my current one is IDE
6 - I have a copy of XP and a HDD, just looking to upgrade MB, CPU, RAM
7 - I'll be building it
8 - Looking to be inexpensive, it's not a necessity, but would be nice to upgrade
9 - I was looking at Intel MB and CPU, Crucial RAM.

I may look for an inexpensive desktop only from Lenovo for price comparison. It might be be easier to just get one of those and have a smaller tower. Current one is a pretty good sized Antec.

So you have case,need:
1.CPU - Intel-i7 or AMD
2.RAM - 4G DDRIII
3.Motherboard - ASUS,Gigabate or another if you want to use the old, post your specification .
In manual book for motherboard can see the RAM and CPU compatible for this.

I'm looking at...

1. CPU - Intel Core i3-2100
2. RAM - Crucial 2X2GB DDR3 1333
3. MB - Intel DH67BLB3
4. DVD-ROM - MB doesn't have IDE, unless I can figure something out

Looking on Newegg, that same socket, I could maybe go with a Celeron or Pentium and save some money, but I need to see if it'll be worth it.

Just a comparison of what she's using now...
CPU - AMD Athlon XP 2500+ Barton 1.833GHz
2GB RAM
Some AGP video card, can't remember which one

1.CPU-i3 or i5 only ,Celeron not recommended
2.Support for DDR3 1333/1066 MHz DIMMs - 4G will be great or 2x2G
3.HDD SATA

Oh, solves that problem.

It'll be more "future" proof anyway. Although I've never really just upgraded a CPU.

And we already have a SATA HDD. It's an older one, but she's needing more power now. I think I'll upgrade it whenever I update to Windows 7/8.
