I like to use my iphone4 to play music, but have two major complaints:
    1) the volume is too high for use in a quiet room! And when i set a volume limit in the settings, i find that i am no longer able to tune the volume as finely as i would like.
    2) there arent enough external control buttons! if i play music and keep the phone in my pocket, i cannot control which song is playing without taking the phone out, unlocking it, and using the touchscreen. Almost made me wish the phone had a click wheel on the back or something

Any suggestions related to the above? Thanks.

There isn't anything you ca n do for either of these. There are apps in the app store that let you preform gestures in your pocket to control music, but that's it.

You could use the iPhone headphones to change songs. Don't know if that helps at all.

Use the provided earbuds, or any compatible headphones with mic or remote. They will allow you to skip or rewind with the remote buttons built into the wire, or use voice commands to control the iPod.

    1) Settings > iPod > Turn "Sound check" on.
    2) Use the headphones, as others have said.

two clicks on the center of the earbuds control will go to the next song.

Dammit Cubs...how is he going to press play if the phone is in his pocket and the screen is locked?

you could press the earbuds center button once... or hold the button until the voice activation comes on and say "play songs by 'artist name'" (through the mic on the earbuds)

Shaking the iPhone advances to the next song.

Actually, shaking it shuffles the songs.

I'm not sure what you're saying about the volume issue, but regarding the buttons; either use the provided headphones which have controls, or double click the home button when the phone is locked to bring up the iPod controls. Not that difficult.
