I'll begin with saying I don't own the Apple Pencil. This weekend my mom bought an iPad Pro 10.5 and since she loves to write notes all the time, I suggested she try the pencil. I helped her set up the iPad, and we paired the pencil, and all seems to work fine.

I remembered Apple showing the new iOS11 feature that allows you to launch right into the Notes app by just pressing the pencil on the screen. However, I have been unable to get this to work. We went into the settings and found the option under the Notes app settings, and I turned it on, but it still doesn't seem to be working. Is there anything else I need to do?

Screen needs to be on, if you have the smart cover it turns on automatically when you open it.

In addition to turning on the option in the Notes app setting, you also need to: Go to Settings > Control Center > Customize Controls > add Notes

The Notes will activate when you are on the Lock screen—which has to be on, like Skika said.

Thanks! This is what we were overlooking. I was trying to open notes by tapping the pencil on the screen when the screen was off. Once I tap the power button and the screen turns on, it works fine now.

I keep thinking the pencil would have a button (top or side to trigger creating Note or using as touch assistive). The App Store has some but hard to sort, filter and find perfect one.
