I recently bought a used ATV1 (Apple TV 1- First Generation, the big silver one with the HDD inside).

It's been hacked, it has a linux setup on it (MythBuntu) but I don't know the passwords or any of that. Is there a way I can reset it, re-hack it, make it usable in my home theater environment?

This is my first Apple TV first gen, and I'm completely lost, and all of the instructions out there are really old, which I understand, and they apply to a unmodified ATV1. This one already has Linux, but since I don't know the SSH passwords, I can't get in. I don't even have the remote, it was a garage sale find ... but now I'm a little lost.

ANY GUIDANCE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!

with a usb stick, you can download a program called openelec and can customize the appletv to run xbmc over a linux base. it actually works quite well.

I would recommend you get an apple remote for it though, will be difficult to use without one. but you could potentially use a wireless mouse/keyboard combo with it.

info on mythtv front end: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Installing_MythFrontend_on_an_AppleTV

also another linux os for it:

Some of that should help. When I had my 1st gen unit, ran openelec and it worked very well.

Only recently got rid of mine and upgraded to amazon fire tv box, because I got one for free.
