Hey guys,

So I recently dove into the whole Philips Hue Lighting world and got a Light Strip Plus, 2 White and Color Hue Bulbs and a Hue Bridge. I did some prior research and found out it is possible to connect the Bridge to my homes network via a Network repeater type thing.

Here is a link to the exact one I am currently trying to use:

TP-Link N300 Wireless Wi-Fi Nano Travel Router with Range Extender/Access Point/Client/Bridge Modes (TL-WR802N) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00TQEX8BO?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

My set up at home isn’t ideal as the houses internet modem is in my roommates room. I connected the repeater in my room and linked it to my WiFi. I then set it up in Client mode and connected the Bridge to it via the the Ethernet cable. I am getting all 3 blue lights on the Bridge lit steady so it does seem to be linking up to the network correctly. But when I get on my iPhone and go to the Hue app, it doesn’t seem to locate the Bridge at all. And yes I am on the same WiFi network as the Bridge using my iPhone.

I really really hope I can get this working all from within my own room. If not I probably will have to get ride of all the lights :(

Can anyone one here please lend me a hand?

I would want to know for sure whether the repeater is working. Do you have a computer that you could connect to the ethernet port to confirm?

I'm not sure client mode is the correct way to set up your repeater. I would expect it to be called bridge mode. Double-check that. The point is that you don't want the repeater doing anything with network addresses. Anything connected to the repeater's ethernet port should be getting a network address from the house's internet modem.

Finally, before you return the HUE, connect it directly to the modem in your roommate's room. It'll probably work fine.

I will try and connect my laptop to the repeater via Ethernet to check wether I can get internet access.

Client mode seems to be the correct mode.

I also did try to connect the Bridge directly to the modem it’s self and ended up with no luck. Not sure why that is.

I’m not sure if that has an effect on anything but, my roommate did have our WiFi changed a little bit as far as networks are concerned. The house has 2 different WiFi network names. 1 name is for him and his wife to use and I have my own network name to use. Not sure how that works specifically but there is still only one internet modem and one WiFi modem.

UPDATE:

So I am at another person house and hooked it up directly to their Internet modem and was successful to pair my Bridge with the network. I did notice upon pairing that the Bridge needed to update itself.

Would it be possible that this update might make it work with the repeater or help solve my connectivity issue in my own house?

I will report back once I get back to my own house and try again.

So I just tried plugging in the repeater to my laptops Ethernet port to test the internet connection and it doesn’t seem to be working. On my laptop it shows that the connection is “limited” and no internet is available...

Maybe I need to try setting up the repeater in a different mode? That doesn’t make sense as “client mode” seems to be the right set up for my application for the Hue Bridge. Or maybe I’m not doing the set up process for client mode correctly?

Any more help would be greatly appreciated.
