Hi there guys! My brother is looking into a memory upgrade for his 24" iMac.
His is the white 24" with 2.16ghz. I believe after Googling around, it's a MA456LL model. He upgraded to 2gb with nVidia 7600GT.

He's now doing more and more stuff with his computer and sometimes it hangs up. He is still running on OS 10.4.11.

We noticed that with barely any apps open, he has around 500mb of RAM free. So I think he needs more.

The max I believe on this computer is 3gb. So I'm planning to get another 2gb of DDR2 PC-5300 667mhz from corsair.

Anyone have any suggestions or comments on the RAM or suggest another brand that will work well with the RAM installed from Apple?

    Any input is appreciated, Thanks!!!

You can find out exactly which model you have by going to System Profiler, found in the Utilities folder, in Applications.

Assuming you're sure you have the right model, you're looking for the right stuff. The maximum RAM will likely be 3.3GB. If he has two 1GB sticks currently installed then removing one and adding a 2GB stick will be fine. If he has a single 2GB stick installed now, I'd recommend just buying a 1GB stick, instead of trying to squeeze an extra 300MB out of a larger stick.

He has 2x 1gig ram in each slot, so that's why he's planning to get an extra 2gb.

My only concern is, with 2 different rams brands cause the system to be unstable?

two different brands of ram should be fine. the are made for your model, so they will play nice

He has 2 x 1GB right now? Are you trying to replace one of the 1GB sticks with a 2GB sticks? It might be more cost effective to get 2 x 2GB. I'm not 100% familiar with iMac memory, but I know that matching memory on each stick sometimes matters.

    Edit:
He has the 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo with 24" screen, right? I THINK those have a theoretical max of 3GB... so I was wrong, lol. I don't know if there's any benefit to having 2 X 2GB and it only using 3GB or having a 1GB and a 2GB.
