Something suddenly happened to my MacBook Pro. It has something to do with sound. No media that involves sound is getting played. Example when I play local video YT music it doesn't plays. When I go to settings in speakers its unable to detect sound

Run hardware diagnostics

If it finds no issues, problem is software.
I realized that its unable detect sound of onboard speakers. When it doesn't detect speakers it doesn't play media. However when I connect with my AirPods it works. Any idea whats wrong with the speakers

Shut down your MBP, wait a while and reboot. Most times, a simple reboot would solve the problem. Also, forget AirPods and reconnect them.

I did that multiple times I can see I cannot hear the chim sound while booting. It looks like circuit is disconnected from internal speakers.

You have to forget (disconnect) the AirPods for a while, for the MBP to reconnect to the internal speakers.

I tried that too. My MBP wasn't connected with AirPods for almost a year. It was when the sound stopped working I connected it with AirPods to see what the problem was.

In that case, you’d best take it to the service centre.

In all other respects, also ensure any other speakers or audio peripheral devices are disconnected regardless if they are wired or wireless.

Did you also use your MacBook Pro in a wet or dusty environment? This includes if you accidentally spilled water or chips on your laptop. 💻

That is normal use. Get a small little brush (like a painter’s brush that is thin and fine haired) and try to get it off. You can also pick it out with a tiny tweezers very gently if the brush does not work. Sometimes it does build up over time.

Another fellow here has asked you to run Apple diagnostics. Has the test returned negative and did not show any signs of hardware failure? Also try this link here.

I always clean the dust, from the base and keyboard and clean the screen with the spray. Now if some dust got deposited inside and affected the speakers. There is no way I can find out

You can use the flashlight on your iPhone to double-check any presence of dust/debris still laying in there. Also, running apple Diagnostics is easy by pressing and holding down the Power button (ARM MBPs) or the D key (Intels), and if you are too worried about the codes if it comes out that it is positive that there is an underlying hardware failure or malfunction, you can schedule a Genius Bar appointment at your local Apple Store, bring up the error code and the notes we all taken to help you troubleshoot to the Genius. Get a Time Machine backup done and lots of external storage devices ready in case your MBP needs to be repaired by the Genius; these caring Apple Store techs will check out your Mac with advanced diagnostics. I am highly likely if the problem persists after checking on any peripherals used, cleaning it and doing the Apple Diagnostics test, it is a hardware issue requiring repair.

I wish you luck and I hope you have a great night. Take care man!

So when you change the alert sound at full volume in Sound preferences with the correct interface set you don't hear anything?

What if you reinstall macOS?
OP, if you are comfortable doing it install Apple Configurator 2 after backing up to Time Machine/turning off find my, and reinstall macOS sequoia into the disk drive you boot into your MacBook Pro. You can also perform a clean install of macOS to a volume of your disk. This process also requires a spare Mac with the software installed, a usb c cable (DO NOT USE MagSafe, these do not transmit data from the Mac), and external storage for Time Machine.

If your Mac 💻 is Intel based, use internet recovery or macOS recovery ❤️‍🩹 to recover your disk to install the macOS version via disk utility which requires you to delete the volume group from your disk.

Test it again by watching a YouTube video that has audio after reinstalling macOS and completing the setup assistant after restoring from disk backup.

OP:

Do you have a set of wired headphones around, with the 3.5mm stereo plug?

If so, plug it into the headphone port.
Do you get sound into the phones that way?

Now, if you take the plug OUT of the port, does the sound play any other way?

There's a small "switch" inside the headphone port that disables sound through the speakers when phones are plugged in. It can sometimes get "stuck", even when the headphone plug is removed, and no sound will play through the speakers (the Mac still thinks there are phones plugged in)...

The sound works with all bluetooth connected devices, the AirPods and my Sono Roam wireless speakers. I never connected my MacBook with any device that uses 3.5 MM jack. But I will try what you told me

Sure I can give it a try but for that I need to first get a 1TB SSD, copy all the data and then install it

Walmart and department stores have these things. Get the Sandisk brand it is the best choice for flash storage and disk drives. B&H has a lot of SSDs as they specialize a lot for pros and media users

Many over ear headphones like gaming headphones 🎧 have their own volume control or mute button on it. Make sure to test it out by unmuting it.
