Hello,
I have an A1446 iPod, likely made in 2012. It works just fine, I've used it almost every day for the last fourteen years and haven't run into much trouble.
There's a song uploaded on there that I want to download onto my computer. I can't find that version of the song anywhere online, and I don't want to lose it in case the iPod loses the will to live one day.

If anyone knows the potential risks of working with an older device and how to avoid them if possible, please let me know! Maybe there's nothing to worry about, but I'd rather be informed.

Since it's a non-Touch, you can just make a whole backup of the drive to be safe. And to retrieve the file you can just enter the hidden iPod_Control folder, it's somewhere in there, albeit with a random name. I'm sure there are programs you can use which will recover it with the full name intact, and of course there's iTunes's transfer purchase history (though again, you should make a direct backup in case iTunes syncing goes wrong; a straight up copy of the iPod_Control folder to your PC will work).
