I thought it best to post this here, as the PPC sections gets more foot fall.

So I'm trying to bring a classic 5th gen ipod video back from death, but I'm not stuck in a real fix. Apparently iTunes 9 will no longer connect to the apple servers and I have no way of downloading the firmware to restore it.

I did find a ipod update 1.30, however it is meant for OS x 10.2 and whenever i try to run it, I get an error, telling me i need the OS X networking update.

If anyone can offer some advice or has the updater for 1.3, that would be a huge help

Do you have anything newer to set the ipod up with? Because they will work with basically anything under the sun that runs a current Mac OS or Windows version. My understanding is that to do a restore, iTunes downloads the ipod's firmware, and I don't know if any version for PPC Mac can access those servers anymore. If you have music on that device you want to sync, once they ipod is working you should be able to sync it on any version of iTunes capable of talking to the ipod.

But that said, you would want to be on 10.4 or 10.5 if you were even going to try this with a ppc Mac, that way, you could at least take updates to itunes, what few there are. Your best bet is 10.5, but again, I can't promise that iTunes can even talk to their servers anymore.

Plug it into a newer machine and use that to restore it, that's what I had to do to restore my Mini after trying and failing with my iBook.

*UPDATE*

So i thought I should report back, just in the event someone does a search hoping to find a means of getting their iPod fixed. Note, I'm also going to upload this to my blog, so I have it written down in case I forget :p

First off, can you restore an iPod using a PPC Mac, even when iTunes 9 will not connect to the update server?

YES you most certainly CAN still restore an iPod using a PPC Mac. I'm running 10.4.11 with iTunes 9.2.1 on my iBook G4 and was able to restore a 5th Generation iPod video, using the following procedure

1. Determine the model of iPod you're wanting to restore, what is it? 1st gen, 2nd gen?
2. Connect the iPod up to iTunes, while it can't yet restore the device, it can tell you what firmware the iPod is running.
3. Locate and download the appropriate ipsw file for your iPod, this is a good place to start (https://iosindex.com/ios-firmware#ipod)
4. With your iPod connected to your computer, bring up iTunes. Now press and hold the ALT key, while doing so, use your mouse to click the 'restore' button.
5. A window will now have appeared, located the ipsw file you downloaded earlier and select it. Provided you downloaded the file corresponding to your model of iPod, it should begin the restore process. If you downloaded the wrong file, don't worry, iTunes will tell you and you'll have to go back an repeat steps 1 to 3.

Leave you iPod connected until the restore has been completed, voila!
