I was excited when it became known that the Apple TV 4K would support HDR, including Dolby Vision. That was one of the main reasons I went to the purchase of a new TV and receiver after the summer. Now I have the following setup:

- Apple TV 4K
- Yamaha RX-A3070 (2017 top model)
- LG OLED65B7V (2017 European version)

When I set up the Apple TV 4K everything looked right except one thing: Dolby Vision option was missing. However, HDR option was there.

This was disappointing as the RX-A3070 specifications states clearly that Dolby Vision is supported, quote: "4K Ultra HD Pass-through with HDCP 2.2 support, HDR Video including Dolby Vision and Hybrid Log-Gamma, and BT.2020".

I was initially unsure if the latest firmware was installed on the Yamaha. It turned out it was. The next thing I tried was to investigate if there are any settings that must be tweaked, but no luck. My HDMI cables are of the highest quality so they are not the problem.

When I connect the Apple TV directly to the TV, Dolby Vision immediately shows up as an option. Thus, everything works, except the Yamaha passthru.

After having googled a lot on various AV forums and the like (Yamaha sites are lacking information), there seems to be a lot of confusion about this. Despite the fact that Yamaha has clearly established in the specifications that Dolby Vision is supported, I found several threads where it was claimed that support is not currently there, but will come in a future firmware update.

Yamaha sent a press release this spring which stated that selected 2016 models would get Dolby Vision through firmware update soon. According to owners of these models, this update has not yet come. 2017 models, which were not yet released at the time of the press release, were not mentioned. I thought the 2017 models would have support out of the box.

Furthermore, I've seen sources claiming to quote Yamaha on that 2017 models also need a firmware update to support Dolby Vision. One message mentioned "in the fall" as ETA, while another mentioned "by the end of the year".

Anyway, I'm disappointed with Yamaha because of the misleading marketing. But if I find that there is an update that will fix this later this year, I can at least avoid more frustrating investigation.

Are there anyone here who can confirm, or most possibly reject, that Yamaha's 2017 models currently do support Dolby Vision? Or may I look for other sources of error?

All good knowledge and suggestions are highly appreciated.

My Sony STR-DN1080 only got the dolby vision update last week and its online blurb stated it already had it, I would say it won't be long and it will update soon. 4K HDR/Dolby Vision is a massive jump through hoops to get working and I'm glad that apple didn't release all this with the original Apple TV 4. but when it all falls into place I can confirm its a fantastic picture and experience, I just hope your blood does not boil as high as mine before then!!!!

I have a 2015 Denon receiver that is supposed to get the DV update this month. I wonder if there is some common issue all these vendors were working to iron out, because it seems like a lot of receivers are getting updated Sept/Oct.

I think it might have something to do with licensing costs of DV and they held off until dolby vision was a popular thing with consumers and an external device that could provide DV to the Masses was available. but then again maybe not!

I found this post on the AVS forums saying you still need a forthcoming firmware update. That jdsmoothie fellow that posted the information is legit and very active on the AVS forums. I think he is a salesman for a high end AV shop.

Thank you for this, it was driving me crazy why I could not get the DolbyVision option to show up while connected through my 2017 Aventage receiver, which clearly says on the product page:
  • 4K Ultra HD pass-through with HDCP 2.2 support, HDR Video including Hybrid Log-Gamma and Dolby Vision™ Compatibility and BT.2020
I'll await the firmware update. In the meantime for a workaround, I have the AppleTV connected directly to my TV to get the DolbyVision support, and then the audio is routed back to the receiver through via ARC which has worked just fine.

it's going to be interesting / annoying if all the gear we're buying now with the supposed dv update don't properly implement it

i just bought a new yamaha amp which promised that...

These Yamaha posts are helpful! In the last couple of weeks I acquired a new TV (Samsung MU6300 4K) and a new receiver (Yamaha RXV-483) to upgrade my setup for 4K at the lowest possible cost. I'm glad that we may see another firmware update soon because my 1.18 didn't make it work...

Thank you for your kind help. It seems it was like I thought. I'm not impressed by Yamahas bragging about Dolby Vision support when they still don't have it after several months. But at least now I can sit back relaxing and wait for the magic to happen. Hope it will be sooner than by the end of the year. Yamaha should feel a lot of pressure now that the Apple TV 4K is released.

I agree... that is pretty lame to advertise DV in the specs on the web page when it does not yet support it. I could see putting note or something that it is coming in an update, but they way they have it now seems a little dishonest.

FYI - The 1.26 Yamaha firmware update was posted in the last couple of days. Not sure this one did anything though as there were no release notes. I don't think DV was enabled on this one..

Thanks for the information. I updated the firmware now. Unfortuneatly still no Dolby Vision support.

After confirming that my RX-V483 does not pass Dolby Vision as promised in the specs published on Amazon and Yamaha’s own website, I submitted a tech support request. Here is the official response I received today, Oct. 9, 2017:

Thanks for your email. As of the writing of this email. HDR10 is the only HDR standard supported by the RX-V483, and other Yamaha AV receivers. We are currently awaiting certification from Dolby Laboratories to obtain licensing for Dolby Vision. We anticipate the certification to be approved in the near future, and the receiver will be updated to support Dolby Vision by the end of 2017. If your receiver is connected to the internet, you will receive a pop-up notification when the update is available for download.

Thanks for your patience, and let me know if you need further assistance.

[doublepost=1507691120][/doublepost]On another note... A new pet peeve of mine is changing inputs on my receiver to the Apple TV 4K. I get the continued "ask" of "speakers"... I get around this by just pressing menu and it goes to the main menu but this is a nasty item that immediately needs to get reworked. What is the point?

I understand that I can send audio to other Apple TVs in my house including my receiver but I don't want to choose that every time I turn to that HDMI input. Ridiculous... My options is a wrong graphic like an iPod of the Apple TV 4K and then my other older Apple TVs and my receiver.

Videoman123; UPDATE>>>>>>>>>>>
I’m a little late to change this but last December I ran the firmware update via network on my yamaha receiver & downloaded version 1.32 and now its passing thru Dolbyvision HDR10 and HLG via Directv, I do know the updates are available sooner by direct network updates vs downloading to a thumb drive from the Yamaha support page. So I can definitely say the correct firmware for the features we all needed are available and do indeed work. Good luck!!!<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<I have a Yamaha RX a 2070 also the proud owner of a 65 inch LGOLED TV and Apple TV 4K. This whole thing with the Dolby Vision update on the Yamaha receiver’s is got me awfully frustrated. In early October a firmware update was released by Yamaha and I thought it was the one that we’ve been waiting for all year as it included the audio streaming applications that Yamaha said was going to be included in the Dolby Vision update (Tidal Deezer) but alas no Dolby Vision update. By the way I also finally just threw in the towel in hooked up my Apple TV directly to my television and back feeding the audio through the ARC HDMI. My biggest disappointment is Yamaha‘s lack of communication with its customers.
My firmware version on my receiver is currently 1.31 but when I go to the Yamaha download site it’s still stuck on 1.27.
When I read about other manufactures releasing updates and seemingly communicating with their customers it makes me wonder if I made the right choice.

I recently purchased (December 2017) the Yamaha RX-V681 for use with my LG OLED65c7p TV and Apple TV4k because I saw that there was supposed to be a firmware update to support Dolby Vision. And, was disappointed and frustrated that I couldn't get it to work, until I finally found the fix in the RX-V681 owners forum at avforums.com (https://www.avforums.com/threads/yamaha-rx-v681-owners-thread.2038694/). The change that got it to work for me is setting the HDMI 4K signal format to MODE 1 instead of MODE 2. To further complicate matters, this is an advanced setting that's not visible through the on-screen controls. See here for how to do this: http://faq.yamaha.com/us/en/article/audio-visual/av-receivers-amps/rx/rx-v681_u/11033/9323

Hope that helps!
