Need help writing a script

I'm not all that good at writing scripts or using Automator, so any suggestions would be helpful. Here's what I'm trying to do. Once a file has been downloaded, I want it to be renamed to a certain standard I'm using and then copied to another folder on my Mac mini. Seems pretty simple but I have no idea how to go about it. Any ideas?
