I'm currently using a 2019 15" MacBook Pro 2.6/16/256/hexa-core

I have had my eye on the 14" Space Black MacBrook Pro for awhile now and I love it

Should I upgrade or just keep using my current notebook?

Do you need it or do you want it? :)

Not going to lie it's going to be a lot faster than your 5 year old Intel MacBook. But if all you're doing is email, word processing, or web stuff...you might not notice!

I guess "I want it"

I don't use a computer every day

When I do it's for numbers app, internet browsing like YouTube, paying bills online

That's about it

I am too! I’m going with the Pro Chip,24 GB Unified Memory, and 1TB SSD Storage for $2399. Currently using a 2013 13” MBA 512 HD 16 GB RAM. Only thing I did to it was put in a new battery , and the Hard Drive. Never let me down

Honestly using a 2013 with no issues is a major flex! Congrats on holding onto it for so long!

Even the forthcoming MacBook Air M4 will probably work wonderfully well for you & you'd save some $$$. But if you have the cash & want it - don't delay!

Makes sense. I will look into the Air. I know they have a black color model, which has really caught my eye! 😍

If you can afford it, go for it. If you can wait for couple months, Apple will likely announce new MBA. Try MBA 15, and you can make a decision. Enjoy life responsibly.

I upgraded from a MacBook Air m1 to the 14 inch MacBook Pro M4 (base model) space black ! Very happy… if you can get it, I suggest you the base model because it’s very good… Better screen, better speakers, more ports, better performances, better battery and more compared to a MacBook Air ! + yes you should upgrade to get an M series Mac… it’s a revolution since they are much more faster, a full day battery life, more compatible apps and Apple Intelligence !

Even if your tasks are "light", the only way to get reasonable screen quality in Apple ecosystem is an iPad Pro or a MacBook Pro.

If color is not that important for you, I'd say upgrade to M1 Pro 32gb and you'll be golden. You'll get a much faster computer without breaking the bank.

If you're keen on Space Black, you can try and find M3 Pro options, there should be some on the used market, and they're barely used as this is a very recent hardware anyway.

No you don’t need it.

It’s your money to do whatever you want with. It’d be a nice “toy,” in a matter of speaking. But consider what else that $1,600 could go towards.

I used a 2010 MacBook Pro for over ten years as my primary computer. That same computer could still do all the tasks you just mentioned. FWIW.

There’s no right or wrong answer! It’s going to be a lot better than your current one and will look pretty. So if you can afford it go for it

Based on what you say the your going to use the computer for a 14" MBP even in the refurbished area is an overkill.
You mite be fine with the iPad Pro and a keyboard. You have a 2 week trial period. Go to the local Apple store and see what fits you and your wallet.
Good Luck

Six years is enough time to not feel guilty about upgrading to a new MBP; just go for it. Just remember that M (1, 2, 3, 4) series MBPs are all really strong; any M-series MBP will be a solid upgrade if you get more than enough RAM for the life cycle of your new MBP.

Get less RAM and you would be sub-optimizing your new multi-$thousand purchase. Load up with RAM and with the max chip if you want your new MBP (any M-series) to be fully competent.

I’ve been using top of the line Intel MacBook Pros since before 2010, and am still using my maxed out 2019 16” Pro. I’ve also had iMacs and Mac Pros over the years. In December I decided to test the Apple Silicon waters and got a used 13” M1 MacBook Air, which was my first time ever using an M-series chip.

Initially I thought it would be nice just to have an ultra portable laptop with great battery life for traveling and working out of office, but it’s quickly become my primary daily driver. Without exaggeration it’s my favorite Mac I’ve ever owned (I’ve also had iMacs and Mac Pros). I keep trying to find reasons to upgrade to something newer, and I just can’t find them. Even with way lower specs on paper than my Intel MacBook Pro, the M1 Air still feels faster.

All this to say, now matter what model you decide on, switching to Apple Silicon will be an upgrade for you. The *only* place it’s been a downgrade for me is with a small decrease in graphics power, but as soon as you go to the M2 or the M1 Pro the graphics power is equivalent to the best 2019 Intel MacBook Pro.

buy black air m3
Not sure about the colour choice, but I went from a 2019 MBP (16GB/2TB) to and M1 Pro 3 years ago and that was amazing. A new air would match the performance of that older M1 and would certainly last another 6 year cycle. The boxy of the air design is not quite as comfortable on the wrists when on your lap and the extra ports on the Pro are handy (especially SD card and HDMI), but the Air is smaller and lighter. I use an M3 Air for development and the same M1 for work.

Yeah, that's me. I currently have the M1 MacBook Pro 16in. It works great, the resolution is the same as the current one. Of the course the specs are better on the newer version. But then I think, every time they come out with a newer MacBook. The trade in value on my mine goes down.

… so for your use case the upgrade won’t help and it’s essentially a toy. A toy that isn’t used very often. Honestly computers aren’t fun for that long either, they quickly disappear as a tool.

If the money doesn’t mean anything for you, go ahead.

If you necessarily need to upgrade I’d get the cheapest MacBook. They’re fast, quiet, light and have better value/price.

Have you considered the Air?

Based on the early ‘Jan to March’ rumours, and the fact shipping dates for BTO Airs have pushed back in the last week or so, I would expect in the next week or two they’ll announce the M4 Air.

That alone will be infinitely faster than your 2019 pro. Hell, even the M1, 2 or 3 probably will be

It’ll save you some money and is a lighter (and a lot better looking IMO) MacBook. Obviously comes in 13” or 15” though not 14”. You could even consider the M3 when the M4 comes out and save even more money as the price will drop.

That’s what I’m doing. I’m like you. I barely use my 2019 13” Pro other than for web browsing pretty much and I’ll be upgrading to a M4 Air when they announce it. Can’t wait!

I don’t NEED it, but my MBP is over 5 years old now so I’m doing it more to be able to sell and still get somewhat of a good price, and to futureproof myself for the next few years
