I have been trying to access some microsoft word files from a 1987 Mac SE that only uses a floppy. The files on the floppy say "Microsoft Word doc" although people have told me it is probably Word Perfect. A computer tech accidentally deleted the program from my old but working perfectly Mac. The message I get when the name of the doc comes up is that the application is missing. these files are very important to me and I am trying to find a way to access. Today I bought a USB floppy drive reader but neither my Imac G5 nor Power Book G4 recognize it at all. Any help would be appreciated.

Is there any way for you to email off the SE? Or network? My memory is that the old floppies are less dense than later ones, and the USB floppy drives do not read the earlier discs; you'll have to use another method to get the files copied over.

Duff-Man says...actually, if you had used "high density" floppy disks on the old SE and formatted them as "double density" disks they *might* still be readable. If they have the hole on one side (not the side with the movable "lock") then try putting a piece of tape over the hole and seeing if the drive now reads it properly. Also, if indeed they are Wordperfect files you can get a copy of Abiword (free download) to read the WP files....oh yeah!
