So i recently installed windows 7(64 bit) with 32 GB on my mbp. As of right now all that i'm running is solidworks, i do plan to eventually put a game or 2 on it.

My issue is that with just solidworks (only small projects saved so far), google chrome, microsoft security essentials installed i have only got 1.58 GB free. I'm not sure if this is 'normal' or if something is wrong. I don't understand where the other 30GB are being used up. I know that the system takes up a good bit of space, but based on what i read prior to installing it, 32GB should have been plenty.

20 GB is the recommended minimum for W7 64bit. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/system-requirements

Note that if you have 8 GB of RAM, you will have an 8 GB hibernation file and an 8GB+ swap file taking up a whopping 16 GB. (32 GB doesn't look so comfortable now, does it?)

My rule of thumb, especially if you are going to do something like SolidWorks, is that you need to plan on dedicating 20-30% of your HDD to Windows. So if you have a 500 GB drive, plan on 100-150 GB of space for Windows 7 to be comfortable.

Check the guide stickied to the top of the forum for ways to increase the amount of space dedicated to Windows.
