i have the 8gb ipod touch, and its just fine for me. I have about 20 apps and 700 songs, and i still have room left. The thing is, 8gb is alot. You dont NEED all the apps, sometimes i would like more storage, but in that case, delete some songs. Do you really need all the lady gaga albums on ur ipod?

It depends if you play a lot of games and if you like to have one or two of the latest titles on your phone at the one time. For example, Modern Combat 3 weighs in at over 1.5GB once installed, and the likes of FIFA 12 are 1.8GB when installed. And, very likely, Infinity Blade 2 will push things even further.

Two or three top titles on there, there's half your storage gone.

I can't work out what the Sept 2011 upgrade was. My kid was given an 8GB iPod Touch as a present and trying to work out if it's the latest generation because when you put the serial number on Powerbook medic, you are told it is 4th Generation iPod Touch. I though the latest release in Sept 2011 was a 5th generation, albeit not much of an upgrade in spec (as far as I remember only the HD camera was up specked?)

There was no upgrade to the iPod Touch. It is still 4th generation. The only thing that happened at the time of the iPhone 4S announcement was that Apple now offers the iPod Touch in White as well.

I understand the confusion tho! there was so much hype around the October announcement that it just lingered into everyone assuming there were upgrades.

Nothing new for the iPod Touch. but, still a nice treat for your kid to get a new one as a gift!

Well I'm an 8gb iPhone owner now, I've had 2 3rd gen 8gb iPod Touches and a 16gb 1st Gen... I can just about cram 50 games and around 200 songs on an 8gb, I would've loved it if Apple carried on with the 16gb in the iPods as I think that is the best capacity for money to go for... But 8gb is just about sufficient for me...
