I like to know if there exists a Thunderbolt 3 hub or port that can be entirely bus-powered by USB-C. I am also looking for a device for which the Thunderbolt 3 port has Thunderbolt 2 backward compatibility. This way, I can connect a Thunderbolt 2 device (such as my Mac Pro 2013) to it if needed.

I searched for the typical models from OWC, Belkin, and IOGear, all of them appeared to require an AC outlet. However, there are so many models from these manufacturers that I cannot be uncertain. Moreover, some reddit thread I read awhile ago (can't find the post anymore) said that such bus-powered hub or port was released and did not give out any specific information.

Any suggestion?

There are bus powered TB3 devices, but I’ve never seen a bus powered TB3 hub. Power delivery to hub attached TB3 downstream devices would seem suspect to me. What TB3 downstream devices would you attach to the bus powered hub?

@timidhermit Thunderbolt devices have to be Intel Certified, and nothing gets certified if it can’t supply the TB/USB-IF required power (15w per USB-C port).

So bus powered TB peripherals with downstream ports don’t exist.

There may be ’TB-compatible’ knock-off products out there.
Or USB devices that are marketed as 'Thunderbolt' because they work when plugged into a port on a 'Thunderbolt Mac'.
They won’t work as you want unless they are properly TB, and have an external power source.

Because of that, when Apple introduced their two-way TB3><TB2 adapter, they decided not to include power transfer wiring, because both ends needed to plug into a TB dock or hub, which would have its own power supply.

A self-powered TB3 dock will work connected to a TB2 Mac, using Apple's adapter.

No. It doesn't exist.

Bus power will not provide enough power for the laptop. You are asking for more power than TB3 can deliver.

What you are thinking of exists for data, not power delivery (PD).

Here is another, which can support lots of things, including PD, but its using USB-C and outlet power for that..
