Hello,

I have an iMac 2020 and I need a SSD to install windows using bootcamp. Whats a good one? I think 500gb would be enough for what I need it. My budget is up to $150.

You cannot easily install windows onto a USB disk. It won't allow it. There's Windows2Go. But this will never let you upgrade to the next Windows build easily.

But: There’re the following good SSDs

SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD
Adata SE800
Samsung T5 or T7
Crucial X8 is also not bad

Thank you for the recommendations. I’m a bit confused though. There seem to be lots of tutorials on YouTube on how to install windows using bootcamp and how easy it is to install it. Am I missing something here?

This is Windows2Go. Yeah it's "easy" to setup. But it's not officially supported from Microsoft anymore. You cannot do build upgrades on that install. Only regular patches.

Oh gotcha. Thank you for the info!

Would Windows on a Thunderbolt connected drive be upgradeable since it's not on USB?

No, it has to be an internal drive. It’s a frustrating limitation, and one I’ve also run in to. As someone else mentioned above it *can* be done, but it’s not the dead-simple, official Bootcamp way supported by Apple.

I’ll also voice support for the Samsung T5 drive. I has a 500GB one I use with some computers, and a 2TB one hooked up to an Xbox. No issues thus far.
