I needed a free multi-person videoconferencing app, so I downloaded this thing called oovoo. In order to use oovoo, you must install Java:

http://www.oovoo.com/lp/mac_lion_advisory.html

So I went through all that and it downloaded and installed successfully. My question is - what happened, and was what I did even necessary? i.e., in the Java Preferences, under Utilities, if I had checked the "Enable applet plug-in..." box, would I have been prompted to install Java at all? And if not, then where did this "extra" Java that I installed go? Because I don't see anything different anywhere.

I'm confused. Being a Windows user for most of my life made me obsessive about keeping my system clean and clutter-free (not an easy feat on Windows sometimes). I love this thing and I'm paranoid about it becoming some cluttered turd so I get a little bit uneasy when something gets installed and I don't know where it went. Any insight would be helpful, TIA.

Open a terminal and type "java -version." I get the following:

Code:
 *** $ java -version
java version "1.6.0_29"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_29-b11-402-11M3527)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.4-b02-402, mixed mode)
*** $

If you see this, then you probably installed java. If you go to Applications -> Utilities, you find something called "Java Preferences." This should contain further information about your java installation.

Don't worry, it's not gonna hurt you or your mac :)
