I wanted to add one note to this discussion because although it's focusing on the camera functionality of the iPhone 6s vs. the 8/X there is one very Japan specific plus to owning the newest Apple iPhones...

Suica.

Japan has it's own contactless payment system called Suica and it's a standard used all over Japan. It goes by many names but Suica, like the others is based off of Felica and can be used in most major cities across Japan. It can be used for trains, some buses, vending machines and Japanese convenience stores (Referred to locally as Konbini) It's a contactless RFID card that can be topped up with cash at train stations and konbini. Suica compatibility was introduced with a Japanese specific model iPhone 7/7s but has recently been expanded to ALL iPhone 8 / X models of any region.

Having this feature integrated to the iPhone is a huge time saver. You can avoid lines by using Apple Pay to recharge your Suica. You don't have to line up to buy individual ride tickets. It's also used to upgrade to a reserved seat when taking commuter trains. You can even set it up to work when the phone is locked. (no need to use biometrics before taping it onto a RFID reader.) It will work regardless, screen off.

Not related to the Camera, but certainly worth considering. I know this is a very specific use case but @OP did mention Japan specifically.

I had the iPhone 8 and I have the 6S none Plus, I can tell you the new camera on the 8 is noticebly better then the 6S, but it does oversample the colours which aren’t too bad, and overall does make the picture look better.

Intersting I found the colors on my X look way more natural especially when comparing it to a pixel or Samsung galaxy.

Could be, I’ve played with the Note 8 and think it’s more saturated with colours, but the photos are very impressive. Don’t forget my 6S screen is RGB and the iPhone 8 is P3 is it? So that will also make a difference.

But overall the new cameras are definitely an improvement, but you do need to tap on the subject for contrast etc to take a photo, with my spaniel if I don’t it still hopelessly blurred and smudged his fur, that’s annoying...

I think this was the iPhone 8, really detailed, but his black fur is made blacker, still greats shot I think.

Awesome thanks for the epic posts guys, still unsure if I should upgrade / or bring my film camera/ 6s plus. I have an olympus om1 and I too love the fact I have to slow down with it, love the manual controls. Manual focus. Just imagine it would be a pain to bring overseas.
Wish there were more 6a plus vs X camera comparisons.

Here’s a few. The first 3 are from my 6S and the last 5 are from my X. These are just quick little digi-snaps, nothing more and nothing special. If you zoom in a bit you’ll see a definit difference in resolution. Look at the short wall below the spiked metal fence and the concrete column and concrete blocks on the old house on the other side of the spiked metal fence for example. I popped these real quick yesterday morning while having a cup of coffee.
NOTE: bummer I had to reduce the size of them before I could upload here so the differences you can still see however it’s much more obvious in the full resolution files.

[doublepost=1516171376][/doublepost]And great mention on the film camera, i've considered that too. Generally, how would you feel film would compare to iPhone? different everyday I know, but image wise.
I initially thought the hassle of traveling overseas with film, buying film, and developing it, might as well just cough up the $41 a month for the iPhone X.
until i dug deep and saw results like above. they're better, they're good.
but are they $1000 good?

Film would simply eat anything that the X could produce for breakfast (assuming a camera that works and at least decent glass). Even 35mm film has a hugely larger “sensor” compared to the digital sensors in our phones.
If you took a film camera and it were me, i would bring the exposed film back with me and have it developed at a shop I know and trust.
One thing about film is what it teaches, such as composure and such because of the cost involved. It stops you from just digi-snapping hundreds and hundreds of snaps and hoping that a few look ok. :p

I currently have a 35mm Canon A2 (with a handful of lenses) that I’ve had for a zillion years that has been dragged all over the place and has produced thousands of good to fantastic slides for me. Also I have a Bronica SQ-B, medium format, 120, 6x6 backs and lastly also a Sinar P, large format 4x5. All have multiple lenses.
I also have several digital cameras and, of course, a couple of cell phones. :p
