I currently have an 8 year old modem and router. Have Comcast Internet, couple I pads and I phones, laptop, Apple TV. etc.
Getting ready to upgrade to xfinity. They tell me I need a new wireless gateway. Excuse my ignorance but do I still need a modem and router or is it just one device now? Any suggestions on what to purchase ?

Comcast has devices that are a modem, router, and wireless access point all in one box. I would suggest not getting one of those and instead opting for the modem only box, then using a wireless router of your choice.

I'm always for the buy your own modem and buy your own router (I always prefer to have the modem and router/wireless separate from each other).

I've been using my same Motorola SB6120 for 4+ years now. Rental fees would be at least $400 by now.

Plus the wireless range and features on the Comcast all-in-ones they give out are not really that great.
