I just found a 2008 Mac Pro in my price range. Is this the one you were thinking of?:

Two 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon E5462 Processors (8 cores)

Yep. Buy that machine, it'll be great for what you're doing. :)

(I have that exact one, and I'm typing on it now.)

(Although, no offense, given what I originally paid for it, I'm sad to see the price range it's entered. :p )

What are the equipment specs?

I ask, as generally speaking, my recommendation is to jump on it.

But I'm wondering if you'll need to put any upgrades into it (GPU, memory, HDD's), but the lack of funds to do so, which could make a worse proposition than the 2006. Particularly over the GPU and memory (if the 2008 you're looking at is bone stock).

Also note, that FB-DIMM isn't as cheap as DDR3 UDIMM's, which is part of why I'm concerned.

great bloody rig that 2008 mate, snap it up, and likewise to the previous poster, i am saddened at the price you can get that at now... solid, solid performer, and with an el cheapo gpu pc update, you be right as rain. :)

grab it now!

I did it. Thanks everyone! I pulled the trigger on the 8 core this morning. $1195 USD. That's actually $800 less than Powermax. It should be here next week. The GPU is a little weak, but I'm trading some games for a much better GTX 285 (though in a perfect world, I'd get an ATI). I feel so much more at peace with the 3 year old MP than I would have with a new Mini.

Again, thanks for the input on the 8 core.

Congratulations on the machine, and it does sound like a good price. The prices of hardware at Powermax make little sense to me. They ask a lot for old machines with no OS backup disks. Old hardware is something you want to buy cheap so that if you do have to replace aging parts at all, you're still saving something.

People where I live have still been asking way too much on used mac pros. It's like some of these guys believe that computers never depreciate . I'm glad you were able to find one at a good price. It's still a great machine.

Same here. I'm in Riverside CA, about an hour east of LA. Going on Craigslist was not productive. 2.0 and 2.66 1,1's going for well in excess of $1000.00 USD. I don't know if they are actually selling of the asking prices.

That would be one of the many places I looked. I like how people like to ask 80% of the cost of a new one on a 2+ year old machine . Had I known earlier the 6 core upgrade would work in a 2009 model I might have picked up one on closeout right when the 2010s came out as they were $1900. I don't care about the slightly older gpu when I could simply pick up a quadro 4000 for it (better for my work).

I certainly wouldn't drive too far to meet someone that was asking something ridiculous. However, you'll often find that by the time you actually talk to someone face-to-face and are offering cash, they will come down a long way. Often taking over 1/3 of asking price off. Sometimes people just throw up ridiculous asking prices on craigslist to see if some poor soul bites at it. And sometime you find someone that's finally realized that he's just not going to get his asking price after watching a few potential buys walk out the door.

Good call and good buy! Gratz!

I was waiting for a new Mini earlier this year and it grew tired of waiting. I came across this MP 1,1 3.0GHz Quad for less than 400USD. I was in Heaven and after the new Mini finally did show up, I actually felt even better.

That 2008 MP is even better. 64EFI will keep it going for a long time unlike my 1,1 with the 32EFI.

Congratulations to your Mac Pro.

Where did you actually find it?

I have the same experience with craigslist: unreasonably high prices at 90% of the sellers. I don't want to play that haggling game.

When I sell a camera or a computer on craigslist, I put in a fair price. Then I don't have to deal with hagglers and lowballers and always get a decent person that makes the sale a good experience. And the item is usually gone on day 1 or 2.
