As for Word compatibility, I don't see how NeoOffice is going to be any better at it than Pages, or any other word processor that has to reverse-engineer Microsoft's file formats to achieve compatibility. File compatibility even between versions of Word isn't perfect!

Well, NeoOffice is better than Pages, for what that's worth. NeoOffice can handle "track changes," while Pages can't. NeoOffice also opens and saves in .doc format. In Pages, you have to Export a copy of the file every time you save it in MS word format.

Personally, I still like pages, but there are times when I have to use Track Changes, so if I didn't want to pay hundreds of dollars for a word processor, NeoOffice would be the best option. (In my case, I'm chugging along with a copy of Office v.X. Unless Pages has better file compatibility in future editions, I may eventually be forced to upgrade to 2008.)

Right, compatibility with "track changes" is a potentially important distinction. As far as exporting vs. saving in .doc, that one seems like a relatively unimportant distinction. Exporting from Pages to Word format is easy enough.

It really depends. If you're repeatedly going back and forth with someone using MS Word, it can be a nightmare, trying to keep up with the most recent version, and so on. NeoOffice works much better for that, imho. You can even set MS Word as the preferred file format.
